View Full Version : big hp/tq #'s, any rear end upgrades?

I was wondering which upgrades people have made to the rear end when making big HP and TQ numbers? I know that the DriveShaft Shop makes different stage rear axle upgrades but I was looking to get ideas for different options. I have been searching around and have only found one post in which the person specifies using a J30 LSD and axles but everyone else seems to skip over that one key feature about any axle upgrades. Some people say that the stock 240 axles will hold up to the abuse and i have also read that the axles should be upgraded. I would love to keep spending money and buy something from the DriveShaft Shop but i have spent way too much money already on this "little project" :axe:
If you have any ideas let me know. In case your wondering i am in progress to finish up my build which should yield a little over 600rwhp (keeping my fingers crossed hard).

600 bhp is not that much. You have all these things to think about:
* the propeller shaft connecting the gearbox to the diff
* the diff assembly itself
* the drive shafts connecting the diff to the wheels
If you want the absolutely strongest diff from another Nissan, you can upgrade to an R230. The ring gear is 15% larger than an R200 diff to help cope with power. These can be found in Z cars.
As for the propeller shaft, I recommend going with DSS one-piece. Alumnium or steel. Your choice.
For driveshafts, get the strongest DSS unit.
DSS can make custom length propeller and driveshafts to fit the diff into your car.

what engine are we talking about here? 600hp sr, the trans is the weak link and all the rear end stuff should hold up fine. If we are talking about a 600hp v8, then you could consider swapping some rear end parts over.
For a cost effective setup, you can use the q45 or 300zx diff with 300zx axles. But I doubt that the 300zx axles are that much thicker than the 240sx. The 240sx axles are already pretty strong.

^ q45 are 31 spline iirc. I think 300zx is too, but the 300zx diff is bigger than the r200.

You could also upgrade to a R205 out of a GTR. Beefier diff, hubs, and half shafts. It will hold 700+ and bolts right in.

This is for an SR motor so sorry for not being specific. I was thinking about swapping over to a 300zx transmission, Twin Disc Clutch, q45 Diff, hubs, and shafts....but if you guys think the rear will hold up then i will try to see if they will hold. I know this sounds like a noob-ish question but i do not have much experience with the rear end swapouts and options.
I already have a 1 piece aluminum Drive shaft from DSS that i bought some time ago. Hypnotik could you pm me more information about the R205 swap? i greatly appreciate the help guys.

I have never seen an R205 before. Can you tell me more?

GTR's have a R205, more splines on the hubs, bigger half shafts, they use 6 bolt output shafts(not the 3x2). They also use a 1-way mechanical diff stock. To put it into an S-chassis you will need the diff, axels, and hubs. You need to take the input flange off of your diff and swap it onto the R205 also.

Or you could just run it and see. We got a guy out here with an R32 GTS-T thats making over 650whp and he's snapping axles. Thats on an RB that makes more torque than an SR will ever do. He found the weak point of the rear end, and its the axles. He's twisting the axles like pretzels right at the end where it slides into the hubs.

ok,
So a "600bhp" sr...we are talking about GT35R or bigger turbo,,,,and that's mean TONS AND TONS of lag...
Where the GT35R Kick in....5Krpm?...when you reach that you will be already rollling so you will spin til 2morow,
Drag setup,
go with Q45 setup with Q45 axle and Z32 Axle...Proven on 800whp 2JZ 240sx's...
Other than that...solid axle > ALL

Can you elaborate more? What is the "input flange"?

You just need to take off the one bolt in the front and swap the flange with your stock diff. Sorry if I worded it confusing but I don't know what else to call it.

I got you. It's the companion flange that needs to be swapped over from your chassis.
Everything else looks like it should bolt up if you have the correct rear diff cover.
So other than the ring and pinion ratio, the R205 looks like it's identical to the R200 except for the spline count.
If you want to upgrade your axles without upgrading the hub, the Drive Shaft Shop can do custom axles for you that will mate up to the 6 bolt output flanges and bolt up to your existing hub.
Thanks for the info. Good to know.

It's usually the CV's that are the weak link in the drivetrain. I haven't actually seen a snapped axle in a 240sx, not that it hasn't been done before though.
