why do people talk about their vehicles that can drift?

S-Chassis were marketed as "drift" cars as well as sports cars in japan. They had tv commercials with the cas drifting and promoted the chassis as the best drift car. So is it surprising that people think about them in said ways?;)

I bough my 240 for drifting and beating... my previous car was an RX7... after I blew the engine i knew i needed a drift car that could also handle Daily Driving. a New rx7 engine would just blow after a year of daily driving and regular drifting so i researched and picked my 240, i'm very happy with it... does'nt have the feel on my RX7, but i really like driving it!

I really hate to bring this up, but I have been watching TV, and the commercials for cars like, oh, say the FWD pontiac vibe, the FWD Toyota camry, and the FWD pontiac grand prix all show them "drifting," but unfortunatley they are aren't "set up for drifting stock." Just cause they show it on a commercial for the car doesn't mean the car is set up for that or that people will necessarily associate those behaviors with that car.

That's because they're ricers that don't have any understanding of motorsports/performance driving.

You can 'drift' anything... search through my posts for a tarmac rally video I posted showing a Lada (crappy old Soviet car) drifting...

Conversely, the wicked-looking, fast, exciting drifts they see on their bootleg option videos do take a level of car prep that those stuck in the world of LED washer nozzles can't understand. They see an AE86 or S13 sliding with cracked stock bodywork and 15" wheels and assume it's factory-stock.

Any car can be drifted if you're good enough. I personally am not a fan of the drifting or the new craze, but if it's your thing, by all means.

heh... that sort of footage in commercials has been used for decades, don't think it's a "JDM tite drift" thing. Throwing a slide in a commercial is a sure-fire way to make a car look "exciting", just like the ubiquitous tree-lined back road shots make the car look "relaxing" or Honda's white backdrops make their cars look "basic".

Watch closely in the commercials, a lot of the time you can see the rear wheels stop dead for short periods as the stunt driver yanks the handbrake. Also notice they're almost always shot on a dry lake where the sand/salt makes for not only a good visual statement, but conveniently makes it easy to break traction.

OK... I dont mean this in a traditional sense...BUT, there are lots of things you can do in the streets while abiding traffic laws that will make you a better sports car driver.

1. Search for small objects in the road like pebbles while cruising around town, trash or lane-markers (that wont damage your tires) and see if you can step on it with your tire accurately. This will teach you the exact location of your contact patch, and more accurate idea in the back of your head about dimensions of your car as well --
This is useful when you are on a racetrack and aiming for a apex point...to be able to get close to the edge of the road whithout falling off...or drifting to feel where your rear tires are tracing.

2. Try to be stable on your steering inputs... try staying on a lane marker for as long as you can without veering off from it... This teaches you to be very accurate in tracing where you want to go on a raceway. You will notice this is harder than you might think on say a freeway...at speeds of 50 to 70 mph...

3. At an intersection while stopped, rev and hold your engine to 2000, 3000, and 4000, then at 3500, 4500, etc... in neutral... Try to do this without veering your rpm too much... It's something pretty difficult at first too... Once you get good at it, you should be able to tell where your engine speeds are without even looking at the tachometer. -- useful for heel and toe shifts to be able to hit a target rpm accurately and quicky by blipping. And the small increments of foot movement can teach you to stay very accurate in managing throttle inputs in racing... Best pro drivers will be able to demonstrate this with single blip and hold at 250 rpm increments...

4. Try to stop at an intersection line accurately without modulating the brake force too much. This does not have to be at dangerous sudden stopping. You can start early and guess how much stopping pressure is required by your feet... Ideally, you should press once at a given pressure, and hold that pressure to stop at exactly where you want... Useful in teaching you how to brake effieiently and translate braking forces to your foot from feedback of G's.

If you can constantly pay attention to these things...not only you will be a smoother diver in a daily commute but you will be much more ahead of those guys that can't do that on the raceway...trust me... It's a great way to advance your background skills before coming to a raceway.

In that sense, the sport driving can start on the street. Learning how every little motion of your car, even in normal traffic speeds, affect your car and how aware you can be to those motions...

Go ahead... Go to it...it's actually more challenging than you think! and it's safe.

What p1sses me off are people who modify their cars not for the modification, but for the "brand" of the modification and being able to sport it in a sense of "trendiness" -- phuck the motherphucking phuckers.

Most of the sh1t I've done to my car has been done with my own hands. Almost ALL of the modifications I have purchased have required further modification because the products were not complete NOR were they fully operational. I spent a fair chunk of change on my B&M shifter only to find that its a rattling peice of sh1t -- and yes, its the NEW version.

Sporting the look with the brands makes you a trendy phuck face. Having a stock-looking car but spending the time to learn how to drive it makes you a true enthusiast.

I didn't read what every one else said but I drift my car at every turn thats not full of cars. it is a stock peice except for an sr and it is still damn fun to hit every turn with the ass out. try it some time you'll like it.

jdmrice, i read the post you reposted, im thining my drive to work tommarow will be a little different!!

and about setting a car up for drift and driving it on the street is stupid? how about setting your car up for auto-x and driving it on the street, is that stupid as well? i, for one, dont have money to buy a specific carfor racing/drifting, nor have the time and energy to set up a car, run an event, and than revert back to stock set up for a week or two.


man, imagine those people who love there cars, work all week to pay for them, race on sunday and drive to work on monday with no changes, man what fools!!?????

i dont normally post on here but come across on ocassion. if you cant afford a track and use your daily as occ. track machine then fine. some cant afford it but that doesnt dignify tuning your car one way or the other. why not make it decent on all playing fields? thats just my 2 cents.

i also have the money for a daily driver and having a track vehicle as well. but i used to have it both ways, track car on the street sucks. my old fox mustang GT with brembos, coil overs, hi flo xhaust, and wide sticky tires. sure was nice but hated it. but i since because wiser, landed better job, and converted to the righteous nissan path. :)
