Suppose I wanted to fully restore my 1993 240sx fastback
except put a ls1 or ls2 engine in ($6,000)
redo the suspension with something good ($3,000 - $6,000)
fix everything else.
Would I be close in assuming the work would be around 2 - 3 weeks for a shop? ($10,000 tuning shop work)

So Suppose I spent about $25,000

Do you think that I'd be better off just getting a new Nismo 370Z?

I understand that the price differential is quite large 25,000/40,0000

Which do you think is the better decision?

I think making up your own mind is the best decision, EVER.

depends what you plan to do. if you're going to track it, 240 for sure. if it's just a look-cool-go-fast car, then 370z.

it all depends on what you really want. I would echo thatguy with making your own decision on this. Honestly you do not need to spend 25k to build a dope ass LS powered 240 in my opinion.
Again you have to figure this out.

If you dont plan on doing most of that work yourself, I would just get the 370z.

Plus I saw the 370z at an autox coarse. Amazing

hey 1 post........ let me give you a piece of advice

nothing you attempt to do with your s13 will work upon first attempt.

what i mean is this....... line by line i will help you, based on all my years and years of experience. lets begin......

Suppose I wanted to fully restore my 1993 240sx fastback

assuming your car is worth restoring, you wont know till you start taking paint off... essentially revealing problem areas that could have been improperly repaired. but lets not stick here, next...

except put a ls1 or ls2 engine in ($6,000)

find proper motor, hope it is in A-OK condition. wait weeks if not months for a qualified shop to do the proper job... okay, next...

redo the suspension with something good ($3,000 - $6,000)

great, you spend an assload on coilovers and forgot that there are things like bushings and numerous other suspension components that need to be properly addressed... but next (edit, dont forget the s13 suspension is dated compared to the latest and greatest Z suspension, arms are so light weight and better)

fix everything else.

these 3 little words are it. THIS RIGHT HERE can be like 5 years and 20,000 dollars worth of work. your glass, your wiring, your paint, your electrical components such as relays and other problem areas.... degraded interior, etc etc etc... but next (edit, dont forget about all the fucking parts that are special order or no longer available, junk yard diving trips, old car means old car problems)

Would I be close in assuming the work would be around 2 - 3 weeks for a shop? ($10,000 tuning shop work)

2-3 weeks WAIT. good shops will take months to do the above work, not weeks. anyone who does it quicker will just try to take your money and give you shitty quality of work, or just miraculously has nothing to do at the moment.. which means they suck. but next......

So Suppose I spent about $25,000

and guess what, 25k and you've got a 1993 240sx that still has a bunch of shit that needs to be addressed before it will please most people. you'll still have interior rattles, things that dont work, parts that need to be replaced that you cant find........ etc etc etc.... but next..........

Do you think that I'd be better off just getting a new Nismo 370Z?

you have a new car with much smaller headache, instant satisfaction

but you have ugly headlights and now need to pay me 2-3k to make them look nice. real nice.

cheers

I really appreciate your perspective it is very close to my own, I do understand that I over simplified what is required to do a 240sx. And by 3 weeks I meant 120+ hours straight. I know that it would not be complete in 3 weeks exactly and that things wouldn't be complete all at once. Sure it could take months.

My 1993 240sx is one of the cleanest completely stock 240s in... most of the USA

About the 370z light fix, I am highly interested in seeing what you have in mind for that. I checked ClearCorners out but I am guessing what you are alluding to is still in pre-production.

Thanks,

Paul

There is no way I would spend 25k in a s13. Get the 350z. Great car for the money. Heck you can get used 03s for dirt cheap. I sold my super clean blue 03 for only 12k!!
