Voicemail as easy as email, with transcripts

More cool things you can do with Google Voice

Conference calling (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) - Join people into a single call
Call record (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) - Record calls and store them online
Call switch (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) - Switch phones during a call
Mobile site (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) - View your inbox from your mobile
GOOG-411 (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) - Check directory assistance
Manage groups (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) - Set preferences by group

now, there are a LOT of cool features (visual voicemail, call forwarding to all your numbers with a single permanent google number forever, general google integration, voicemail transcripts), but the big thing here is the fact that it's a FIRST PARTY voip application. no more using minutes when you have a wifi connection, and as data bandwidth improves... maybe no more using minutes ever. maybe pay-as-you-go isn't looking so bad anymore.

Yay!

I sit 20ft away from the Google Voice team. They are awesome guys who've worked hard on this product.

I can't believe it's finally out. Go Google Voice!

I heard that there is a long wait to actually be able to get the google voice service tho.
My cousin waited for a few months, but said that they are releasing more new numbers soon tho.

I'm retarded. I'm not grasping what's going on here.

google took over Grand Central, first. what this means:

google will give you a phone number
when people dial that phone number, the call is forwarded to whichever number you'd like
voicemail is recorded through google voice, you can store them forever
voicemails are transcripted so you can READ the voicemail instead of listen to it
you have access to VISUAL VOICEMAIL like the iphone.
you can forward to certain phones during certain times of the day and so on
no matter what the number assigned to whatever phone(s) you have in the future may be, people can always dial one number to reach you
it's a beautiful thing

That makes more sense.

I just requested an invite. Worth a shot. How much is it?

it's free!

basically everything that comes in through your number winds up in your google voice inbox, which looks very much like gmail.

took mine about a week and a half, hopefully yours is quicker!
supposedly you'll also be able to port your existing number(s) to google voice, too! that'd be RAD!
