SLIDE SQUAD, right?

They had those cars in Super Street magazine a long time ago.

Yes they REALLY did drift the civic. The guy's name was Dave as I remember, but I could be wrong. I hung out with him and Mark once, got to ride in the infamous blue coupe. That car is why I fell in love with 240's. Those guys are almost certainly the first US drifters to be publicized in any way, but I know there were others before that never got any publicity.

I would say Slide Squad was the first team that got any sort of public media attention, but they definitely were not the first.

I remember there were a bunch of guys at the original TRD office in Torrance that would drift. This is back in 1993-1994.

Also, I've seen pictures of Ito-san from WELD drifting in the U.S. when he was a race mechanic in Nascar. Although he's from Japan, he drove with some local american guys.

oh yeah, this guy is pretty old school

Don't know if any of you know of drift session but they were holding legal drifting events in hawaii before it took off in the continental USA. not saying they were the first but definently before the hype! here is the link to the cite and if you look deep this is where ross petty and forest wang got there start. web says first year was 2001.

2001 was when they got organized but all were drifting before that. like i said before didn't think they were the first but they have been around. did a quick search and it says first drifting event was in 1996 and the entrants consisted of Rhys Millen and Bryan Norris.

Oh, that was a cool event
anyone could stand right by the wall and get bukkaked with tire bits
I shook this guy's hand and said hi 'cause I thought his car was cool
it was a hatch like mine but a look cooler, think his name was Koguchi or something...
