Yea, it's not the "bluebook" price for one......over in Japan.
Or what you can buy a non-legal "state approved" car here.

But the price for the Motorex cars is almost double because of the whole conversion cost...gotta remember that it's more than just the price of parts and a couple days' work. The cars also include coverage for all the time/money spent developing the conversion process, cost to get NHTSA and EPA to approve the process and the big cost of crash-testing (thus destroying) 15 cars.

Plus, the Tommy Kaira bumper is worth about $4,000 all on it's own. And as far as I undertand, it's the only R32 TK bumper here in North or South America.
(and the EMS is an easy $1500 as well)

As far as I know, they've not crushed any Motorex cars.
I know there were still a few "in the process" when Motorex got shut down, but last I heard was that they allowed JK Technologies to finish the process and released them all (since the buyers had all paid the full amount already)

Stock motorex R33's tend to start around $50K from what I've seen.
(the guy here in STL that had a Motorex R33 sold his in 08 for $56K)

But look at it this way: The bumper is worth an easy $3K itself. And at least $1000 for the EMS.
Plus, the price is negotiable....to a point.

Because the the 1989 models will be 25 years old, making them exempt from U.S. emission and safety standards.

And I got ahold of the DOT guys to get a copy of the Bond Release.
(don't know why I never bothered calling them before...oh well, am just lazy I guess)

Thanks for the rep!

So its legal in California? DAMN Can I offer you my firstborn =]
Ha!
I've got one of those already. :P

And yes, it's CAL legal.
(well.....previous owner put in a cat-less exhaust, which is no problem for me in MO, but you may need to put a cat back in it for CA)

is the dash bad in the car? since you mentioned that you have an extra dash with it.
Oh, the dash in the car is fine.
A friend got a R32 GTS-t front clip for his 240, and I gutted it for any R32 specific parts, just to have extras "just in case"

GRU is a great guy! Sucks you are selling your car man. Hope to see you on the 25th.
Yea...sucks a HUGE one. I'm trying to find a way to get up there...got the money, now just need to arrange stuff with kids since wife is working that day.

r32s and r34s arent legal in california . they never crash tested them.
idk its what i heard
With the changed RI import authorization, only the 33 is legal to import in general.
But the Motorex cars are grandfathered in, so they're ok.

WAKE UP!!!! CALIFORNIA EVERY YEAR HAS SPECIAL BUILD PERMITS THAT ALLOW YOU TO DRIVE A SKYLINE STATE LEGAL HERE IN AMERICA! HAHAHAHA>>>ONLY 300 OF THEM WILL BE PASSED OUT THIS YEAR! GET YOURS SOON BEFORE THE NUMBER HITS THEIR LIMIT! I GREW UP IN JAPAN AND THIS IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL CAR!!!! JUST LIKE IN HIGH SCHOOL! BUT 40K? COME ON? RB26DET SWAP GO FOR 3-4k these days and if anybody wants a skyline just talk to canida!

Gru
07-16-2009, 07:40 PM
.....uhm, that's 300 import exemptions *TOTAL*, not just for Skylines.
And it's a 1 year exemption, which does NOT allow for getting a title & at the end of the year the car has to be exported back out of the US.

And Canada ("canida")? Sure, try to bring one down and title it...see what happens.
(hint: there's a few guys sitting in Federal prison now for doing so. What, you think the Customs agents couldn't think of that trick, too?)

Gru

And that's not counting the R&D costs, which had to be made up for in less than 200 cars.

Of course it's higher than a non-legal one, and especially one in Japan.
The legalization process doubles the price, or more.

That's the price for having a LEGAL Skyline in the US. Sucks, but is true.

And ever since the R35 came out, they're really cracking down on the non-legal ones. Kaizo has had their little legal loophole closed up (and had their computers and a few cars in their shop seized); California is getting even more picky on them; New Jersey just started hitting up any 1985+ car without a full 17-digit VIN to require a secondary inspection and proof of DOT Bond Release.
Hell, I even hear that FL is finally trying to close up their kit-car loophole like Georgia did a couple years ago.

ummm to correct some of you with this mis interpretation of 25 years or older in cali... this stopped a long ass time ago...

the year that the exemption stopped was 1975 or below...

friend that is a smog ref said that OBAMA (dont get mad at me... just the messenger... ) is trying to make the rest of the nation follow the smog laws of california...

that means everyone is to be at least obd2 compliant.... no matter how old you car is... if it is not exempt... and you go to buy a new cat so you can smog... all they will sell you now is a obd2 compliant cat....

as for california exemptions there are 500 per year in the state of california and you have to stand in line at DMV at the start of the new year to get one of those... bu there is also a criteria that you must meet to qualify for the exemption...

sorry to rain on the parade of smog exemptions but there is a lot that you have to go through to get it...

and never believe some that says that it is easy...

current us legal ones are for sale for over 30 k

in canada r32s go for what like 8grand-somewhere in the teens

when they're legal in the u.s., it seems obvious that prices for canadian ones would bump up to somewhere in the teens

basically the r32's market quantity will increase in 2014 but the supply of people wanting to buy them will go up to (because u.s. citizens can buy them).. dont know what that will do to the prices of current legalized cars, but chances are there will be less demand for them.

To be fair I've only seen junky GTR's go for $8. Clean ones go from anywhere from $12-18K. There are already pre orders for R33's that will be legal in Canada early next year. The pricing looks to be in the $20K+

For the trouble that some states gives people who want a GTR the price for this seems fair.

Sorry, I was thinking the Customs exemptions for show/race cars, where they allow a 1-year import of an unconverted car for the purposes of shows, races and advertising events.

As for the cost difference in the US, it's a little different with the Motorex cars.

The cost is for the conversion and certification process.
Not just the raw materials, man-hours and paperwork, but you have to account for the R&D costs (including crashing 15 whole cars AFTER doing the conversion work on them).

And yea...it's one of less than 175 LEGAL Skylines in the US.
And it's California certified, which only about half of those were.
So it's one of maybe 100 fully 50-state legal Skylines.

And as far as I know, it's the only R32 TK bumper on this entire continent...only one of the Motorex imports was a TK-designed car, a R33.

Find another 50-state DOT-certified and legal R32 GT-R, then we'll talk.

I'm not talking some bullshit "kit car" or "state titled" car. I mean that actually *is* legal, and not snuck in under the DOT & Custom's radar and violating at least 4 federal laws to get insured, titled and registered for plates.

Projectfc3s

Wow, these people just don't get it. I remember back when motorex was in buisness, I talked to a guy here in CO who paid 70K for a fully legal R32, this seems like a steal to me. The cars your getting for 9k are not DOT legal, they might be able to get them titled in their respective states, but that doesn't mean they are federally legal, and you are always taking a chance and going to jail and/or having your car taken away. It takes a LOT of work to get these DOT legal, if I had cash I'd take it, free bump!

Just kidding...I drove it here from Boise, in the middle of the winter, and the guy gave me bald tires. Joy.

Only real complaint was no cruise control...and he had a shitty BOV on it, which I immediately replaced with a new SSQV when I got home.
It's also a bit better tuned, so should make better mileage than I did.

1. Yes, it sucks for US people who want to own a legal Skyline......I work for Canadians and that alone has been a major temptation to move up there.

2. 5? I doubt that....2, definitely...maybe three or four GT-S's and possibly 3 GT-R's, though not with the extras that I'm including in the full price.

350Dori
09-16-2009, 08:19 PM
hate everyone saying how cheap they are in canada...the car is for sale in the US and legalized for the US, it is not in canada, thus the price you can get them for in canada does not apply to the sale. This is the only way to have a completely legalized skyline in the US, Kaizo cars are getting impounded and state cars are not federally legal.

Bump for Gru, its an amazing car, whomever you sell the car to is a very lucky person.

Well I got the pictures i needed. And VIN, etc... So um.... Yeah.... This deal is gonna be done. GRU- I will call you this weekend to setup a deposit method. Remember i am in California and i gotta take a few days off in order to fly out and drive back. So let me get my leave approved and then we will rock and roll!!!! OMG!!!!! Im getting a skyline. >.< (sticks tounge out and droolz.)

Here is a minor detail GRU, i would like the entire package with all the extra parts and stuff. But im bringing a buddy with me to drive the car back to California. Do you think all the spare parts will fit with both of us in the car? Im thinking not. So i gotta work out shipping for the extras. But again.... MINOR detail. Im sure we will figure something out.

Depends on if you want the original bumper and the spare dash (vents/blower)...might fit between two cars.
