saw the original trailer a few months ago and didn't have all these updated scenes.

original trailer made me think this was a movie about "our troops in another country and war or something about big corporations drilling for oil in another land" when the woman said "they spending so much money to keep them here when they could be spending it on other things.."

My first thought was this movie is going to blow. But Ive been reading great reviews all over the place. Going tonight to check it out. I really hope it lives up to the hype.

Read this from IGN:

The trouble with giving this film the five stars we've elected to give it is simply that it elevates expectations; it drives people to know more, filling their cinematic bellies before the main course even begins. Know only that the movie is good, it is important, it is strongly made. Let words like "great" and "brilliant" and "genre-defining" linger after the credits have rolled. Go to the film as empty as you can, and believe us, you'll leave satisfied, and with the urge to book a return trip to District 9.

IGN says the most redundant things.
Of course all things equal, lowering or raising your expectations will have some effect.
You also can't fairly rate something based on hype (or lack thereof).
It's not the film's fault you built up your own expectations.

I agree. this year in general has been the worst in a while.
Even the indie/foreign films aren't all that great.
Seems like most action films are PG-13, and made for a pre-pubescent audience.

District 9 look good though.
I find it hilarious how the film takes place in South Africa, with the locales being almost bigot-like.
As always, I enjoy Peter Jackson's work.

In my opinion there is way too much fucking hype for this movie. Litterally every damn post in this thread is like "OMFG DISTRICT 9 FUCKING AMAZING GO SEE IT ITS SO GREAT ASDFASFD". I just saw it today and it was just weird. It was pretty good, but nothing close to a movie where I would be going crazy about. i loved this movie.

there were plenty of parts where it seemed like it was gonna end really bad, then some shit came out of left field and made me go 'wtf! hell yes!'

beginning i was bummed. documentary type movies are cool and all, but they way there were doing it in the first 15ish minutes I didnt enjoy. i thought it was gonna be that way the whole movie but that abruptly ended it got progressively bad ass!

definitely recommend this movie! i wouldnt mind paying to go see it again, this time not in the first fucking row though. that blew having some girl behind me spaz out on my seat for 2 hours. i expect a sequel.

This was the best movie I've seen this year. The beginning had me intrigued, the cameraman angle pulled me into the movie and it felt real. You can feel the disgust, the hate these people have. The story had me hooked, I didn't even think about walking out, even to pee! I held that bastard for a good hour, whoooo. The realisim, the directing, the vaporization of bodies, hell fucking yes. You missed out on the good part; I wasn't feeling the movie from the beginning also but as I stuck it out, like others said, it got progressively better. They certainly left it open for a sequel, and action at the end of the movie kinda off-sets the lack in the beginning half of the movie.

Though I have to admit, the first half had me feeling like I was just watching a situation that was a losing battle. It wasn't the best ending, but it's not a "feel-good" movie to begin with. I enjoyed it, would recommend it.

just saw it a few hours ago, interesting movie... kinda felt like borat with terminator II as funny as that sounds. overall. the plot was good and movie was enjoyable.. but nothing ground-breaking by any means. completely obvious that it was long-winded to remind us all that they are making a fucking sequel, its like gee.. thanks for the newsflash, we already know.

once the movie actually kicked it, it started to remind me of that old video game called "another world" or "out of this world" whichever one you know.

i think the only problem i had with this movie is that the aliens were a bunch of fuckin pussies, would've been fun if they were more aggressive and smarter.

!Zar!
08-16-2009, 04:28 AM
I think that was the whole point of this movie.

Almost every damn alien movie has aliens that have unphathomable power.

And unlike having super bitch ass aliens like ET or Alf, they decided to do something in which the aliens had power, but it was from the weapons they created.

Yet they still exhibited compassion for each other as well as some form of superhuman strength.

I don't think they tried fighting back hard because they hella would've lost to the MNU's weaponry and command squads.

The thing I liked about the movie is that it was well thought out almost the whole way.

Aside from the part where the dude breaks back into MNU and his password still works, it was a pretty good storyline.

Am I saying this is the best movie ever in existence, no.

Nor am I saying it sucks.

All I'm saying is that it's worth going to the theaters and seeing.

I paid $10 to see this movie and at the end I felt that it was $10 well spent.

saw this yesterday. it was pretty good, but not the super badass best movie of the year that everyone was making it out to be. it was put together well, wasn't boring, and best of all it kept me entertained and beat my expectations of this movie being really shitty or overhyped.

there wasn't the crazy advertising here like that park bench in other areas. when i first saw the trailer a few months ago, i didn't even care for this movie, but since everyone said it was good i just watched it. it was either this or GI Joe, but since everyone said GI Joe sucked and this was good, i watched this (i will probably see GI today). i guess i bought into the hype from zilvia.

all in all, i feel better spending $10 for this then some of the other bombs this year like t4, transformers 2, wolverine, etc.

PS. i was just ON TIME for this movie, so of course the whole theater was packed. i had to either sit at the very top row or in those upper corner seats. i choose the top row b/c fuck watching this movie at an angle. next to the empty seat next to me was some guy and his girl, and midway through the movie, she was on her knees giving this dude head. thought something was weird when i could have sworn my peripherals out the corner of my eye saw some bobbing action going on. i guess doing obscene things in public with the chance of being caught turns them on and they thought no one would notice, but i did, so i got to watch another show for free. sweet.

It's just that people don't know how to explain a good movie without over hyping it.

I think Wikus the main character blows, just listening to how he talks and acts was annoying. The movie wasn't all that good like everybody that I knew said it was. I think it was stupid but in a way much like everyday life, like back in the slave days. Oh yeah, I hate this movie because of the fact that it was like a documentry type movie, reminds me of clover field without the horrible camera shaking. But it was also good because right when I get annoyed something good happens but Wikus was just pissing me off.

The main character is supposed to be believable and I think he shows what happens and how far people can go when pushed back into a wall, he's another character that represents man vs society.

I find it hilarious how the film takes place in South Africa, with the locales being almost bigot-like.

i think all different places of the world have people who are bigot-like. i'm sure, a lot of US citizens have a lot of pride in this country and hate outsiders too. you got to places like japan and i'm sure they hate outsiders. when i was in taiwan, i didn't speak taiwanese or mandarin; i went inside a store with an older couple owners and they greeted me, but when i spoke to them in my limited cantonese the guy yelled at me and told me to get the fuck out of there. apparently, one of my taiwanese acquintences told me that taiwanese have a lot of pride in their country and hate outsiders who they believe is going to influence their culture. there's already a rift among true taiwanese born on the islands, and those who are taiwanese but born somewhere else.

anyways, i would be pissed off if i was a south african and we had to house district 9 with a bunch of aliens running around rampant and doing whatever the fuck they want to our city w/o regard to our human laws.

That movie will get your girl in the mood!

i guess, if shrimp-like creatures can get a girl in the mood, a lot of guys would be bringing girls to watch this movie or pirates of the caribean to see that sea captain and johnny depp.

but i would bet that a jonas brothers concert has a higher probability of success and automatic.

SHIT WAS HARDCORE.

any time a mech shows up in anything, it's going to kick ass.

i was thinking the same thing while watching the movie and thought about the mech warriors games. then i realized that tony stark's iron man suits are probably the best type of battle armor (heavily armored with wide array of weaponry but best of all light and mobile, unlike those bulky and clumsy armors like in this movie)

I was also wondering, when the nigerian kingpin warlord was eating the "prawns" if that shit taste like a delicious lobster.

and don't those alien guns remind you of the #6 or #7 gun in the original half life?

man, my mind wanders and thinks about a lot of things. LOL

No, THIS vvvvvvv is reason enough to go see it.
That movie will get your girl in the mood!

Would you've really wanted to be around Joe getting bossed up?

kinda like Joaquin Phoenix...

the guy who played the main character has never acted before, i believe this was his first movie and first time acting from what i've heard.

Eh, I didn't see anything wrong with the dude and his acting.

But a mech and battle armor are two different things.

What if iron man got into a gundam or something?

Or better yet, got into a bigger iron man.

Iron robo?

you're right. battle armor and mech is different.

if iron man got into a mech, after the mech is destroyed, you'd have to deal with the iron man armor. pretty good backup.

i loved the movie. any you know those little signs they post around the theater.......well i may have stolen one........

edit. the iron man in a mech made me laugh. its like when a guy pulls off his mask only to reveal another mask. lol.

Saw it last night with the wife. She HATED it. She said the main character reminded her of Borat just like Mike (ixfxi) said.

Me personally, I didn't like his character. He seemed a little too quirky and slapstick for the situation. I just felt like i couldn't take him seriously though entire time. If he could have just been serious the movie would have been totally different for me.

Over-all I love the premise and I liked (not loved) the execution. I think it's one of these movies you have to watch a couple times to fully appreciate. What sucks though is my wife hated it so much I probably won't get a chance to watch it again unless I watch it on my own.

I would give it 3.5 out of 5 starts.

this movie sure has gotten a lot of attention, everyone i spoke with this weekend was upset that i had already seen the movie... sure is a lot of hype surrounding this movie!

to be honest, i know its comparing apples and oranges.. but if we compare transformers, batman, district 9, any of these teenager action movies.. my personal favorite in terms of plot and design has been Iron Man.. and I'm curious to see what the new one will be like.

the character in district 9 was good, i didnt mind him being a dork... its just the perspective they decided to give him. its like complaining that clark kent is a tard in real life.. its just the way it is.

on friend said he wants to see the movie because it reminds him of "V" the tv series they used to play in the 80s. i saw similarities, but it was different and original in its own way of course.

i wonder how soon the sequel will be released... district 9.2

haha

...obviously not, but that's besides the point.

I'm all for women who choose to objectify themselves in front of random people THEY don't know.

Iron robo?

They probably have some cartoon like that in Japan already, kinda like how in JDM land Spider man has a giant robo.

I didn't bring the girlfriend along for this trip, and from the sounds of it I was better off.

I enjoyed. Though for the first 15 min. or so I felt like I was watching a weird episode of The Office. Definitely liked the story and the ending left me wanting for the movie to be longer. Probably going to watch it again to see if I catch things I didn't the first time.

^^I feel bad for you Meh and Mel, my wife liked the movie. I take it alot of the people posting in this thread have never been around anyone from africa, most of the South Africans I've met are quirky and excentric like that guy in the movie. I'm glad they decided to at least write the script in english (although broken), it would have been a bitch if it were all in Afrikaans.

saw it with Yarou yesterday (with our respective girlfriends! haha no homo).

i thought it was great he thought it was great, im not sure if the females got it.

im gonna say its up there with Cloverfield.

if it was anything like cloverfield with the camera shaking and shit for the entire movie, i would have got up and left. (yes, i'm one of those pussies who got motion sickness and felt like puking the entire movie)

wish it had better ending...

thought that guy is ganna come back in 3 years to fix him...

ending was how it should be. left it open for a sequel and that guy turned into a total prawn.

"christopher" will be back. he seems like a humble dude and true to his words. he also seemed pretty distraught when he saw his fellow prawn be dissected for medical experiments, so when he said "i'm going to go home and bring help" who knows if that's to bring mass armies to kill us humans or just to get all his remaining peoples back home. i'm thinking the latter, but he could want revenge for us treating his peoples like that.

The same reason why you can't catch swine flu from a swine.

i'm kind of slow.. why's that? because you don't pass swine flu by eating pigs, it's a virus spread through human's handling pigs through contact/air-borne?

guy turned into a prawn because he was interacting with too many aliens? he didn't eat them.

am i over analyzing here?

Yeah but, he didn't fly to the ship, he just messaged it to come beam him up

Idk maybe he needed the fuel to use the electronics on the ship as well

Pastey white dude flew it at first and fucked it up. Yeah the fuel in the smaller ship must have something to do with the electronics with the mothership as well. I cant wait to go see this movie agian and pick up on some things I didnt notice.

Just got back from watching this movie. It was simply amazing. I didn't think it would be that good, and I really didn't know what it was about prior to watching it. Soo much action! It kind of has that Cloverfield feel to it. A couple times during the movie I would yell, "HOLLY SHIT" or "FUCK" and then the characters would say the same. haha.

I wanted to see the movie before reading the post, just in case I read a spoiler. :keke: Overall it was a good movie, and I'm pretty sure there will be a sequel. Once I heard "concentration camp" , "war" , "three years" and read "District 10"....I pretty much figure out the bits of a sequel brewing.

The vaporizing humans was crazy and I wouldn't mind one of those MNU pickups. :keke:

Also for some reason I thought the MNU organization was badass.

I would have to watch it again to caught the underlying messages.

movie kick ass for myself.
i did liked it. i just didnt like the main character.
story was good. it shows nature of humans being selfish when they are in trouble.
but other than that im hoping theres a part 2.

I agree about the main character (Wikus) he was just too damn annoying and the moments he got selfish urked me.

Aside from the part where the dude breaks back into MNU and his password still works, it was a pretty good storyline.

Yea, you would think a facility like that would terminate his access once they locked him up. I also didn't get how the biometric scanner worked with a bandage over his finger.

I was also wondering, when the nigerian kingpin warlord was eating the "prawns" if that shit taste like a delicious lobster.

LOL He was definitely grubbing on that limb like it was his last meal

what i do not understand is how spaceship fuel can mutate a human.

The alien technology only works with the alien DNA. The fluid is a concentration of the DNA and fused with that of Wikus (especially in his open wounds). This is just my speculation.

Am I going to have to watch the movie to understand this?

edit: just realized it was you jordan. fucker.

Yes, you're going to have to watch the movie to get the part about cat food.
