280z Question

I was at my uncle's house over the 4th of July weekend and i discovered a 280z buried under a pile of junk. Flat tires covered with dirt and hasnt been started for about 12 years. I asked him about it he said he would either just give it to me free or for very very cheap. My question is, is it worth getting? I know a free car is a free car even if it doest run, but i know that the 240z's are the more race enthusiest ones because they way less and other things. I could restore it back to its original self i supposed or make it into a track car. Just wanted to know what you guys think about it and what you think i should do to it if i decide to get it.

well it might not be a free car after all. i bet it hasnt been registered for awhile or set as non-op. there might be hundreds of dolllars in fees. if its the turbo variant then take it and sell the engine or something. 280zs often swap those motors in theirs

S130(79-83) is KNOWN as a 280z. In the US its called the ZX.

I have a S130 and S30 first series myself. I am selling my S130 but Might fix it up a bit just to show the US how its suppose to be done!! Stock is ugly as hell.
My goal is
Watanabe wheels, ZG flares, and front bumper.

there are too many redneck spec s130's in the USA. they have a bad wrap because nobody in the US has taste when it comes to fixing them up.

Sure there are one or two in the U.S. actually doing it right with the zx. Hopefully I will be one of them. Everyone can buy a 240 and build it to look like everyone else on here. There are not too many people out there building zx's to what they could be.

Look around, you may find some decent looking S130s.
But I'd bet good money that you would come across more nice S30s than S130s.

Ok so i think my uncle my have had a little to much fun in the 70's because i was told that it was a 1979 nissan 280zx.....But after removing some of the junk off the entire car i discovered in nice letters across the back.... Datsun 280z so i am sorting through paper work trying to figure out what year the car actually is, but i am thinking that i should deffinately take this off his hands. I will post pics tonight when i get home.

it should be obvious, even by seeing less one square foot of any surface of the body you should be able to tell.

if you did some research you would know that the 1979 280zx was badged as a "Datsun by Nissan"

79 to 83 are known as the transition years

I wouldn't worry about it unless it was a 75 or earlier. Smog-exemptness is one of the major perks of old cars, if it's not exempt, then you just have a really old and really broken car (more than likely). It might be more of a headache than its worth.

huh. mine only has datusun and 5speed sticker. never seen a s30 with a z badge there. only on the front two fenders.

Agreed, My '75 280z only has the datsun on the back, and 280z emblems on the fenders.


Although, maybe it fell off over the years...
