1st, read this link Ive found - its old but it shows some interesting things about our OEM filters. Note one of the most important things - bypass relief valve, or lack there of.

Anatomy of Oil Filters (http://www.websorcerer.com/GeekOut/index.html)

Secondly, ive been searching around and crossreferencing filters, ALL filters ive checked out that cross reference for the Nissan 240sx has NO built in relief valve.

This guy does though

http://partsmart.boschwebservices.com/RB/NA/AUTO/AFTERMARKET/PARTSMART/PartSmartImages/PL20195.jpg

Specifications: Anti-Drain Back ValveYesHeight4.74O.D.2.98Relief Valve P.S.I.12-15Thread PitchUNF-2BThreads3/4-16Type of FilterSpin-on

For racing applications I beleive you want upwards a 20psi relief PSI. Why doesnt any of the nissan 240sx filter apps include a bypass?

Here is a BITOG thread Filter for race use - Bob Is The Oil Guy (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1518363#Post1518363)

Thanks anto for the part number in this thread
http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/121633-oversized-oil-filter-german-castrol-plus-new-shift-boots.html

That will be my next filter, which is the one in the pic above, which includes a bypass oil pump relief valve.

Reason its so important on our engines is oil starvation on startup. This and a fully sealing anti-drainback valve is key to our timing chains/tensioners life, and reducing the amount of aluminum/copper in our UOA's.

Remeber to blow inside the filters hole to check for leakage, if it leaks so will oil, and overnight your oil in the filter will drain into the pan. Ive heard an empty filter on startup could potentially skip teeth since the tenisioner is pressure opperated.

You DONT want that one, the one you want is;

PL20195

That is the filter that includes the bypass filter.

Again most of the OTC filters FOR A NISSAN 240sx KA24 do NOT include a bypass filter.....Why? I dont know.

Approximately how much does the PL20195 cost?
Is it commonly available at parts stores/Walmart?

Bigsyke

Should be around $6-7 tops. No walmart only has M1's Frams etc.

Advanced auto, pepboys. Couldnt find them at oreillys/autozone.

yes, hopefully picking another one up tonight.

Its for a crystler i believe, but like ive said the thread pitch/depth and gasket ID/OD are the exact same as nissans KA filters, only difference is this filter is longer, and it includes a bypass oil pump relief.

I only used it for a few miles because like on the wix the silicone antidrain back would leak, and id get horrible dry starts. I would build pressure about 3 seconds after I start the car after letting it sit for 24 hours. I just need to blow inside the threaded hole to see if the new one holds air.

I truely think that after you open up the filters, they make little to no differences as long as the filters have;

Metal end caps
Decent canister thickness and burst PSI rating
Bypass oil pump relief valve -almost all nissan 240sx apps don't have the bypass.
Fully sealing silicone anti drainback.
Synthetic or a synthetic blend - pureone is synthetic blend.

Out of those specs, the pureone is the only one I could find. Tons of other cars use the PL20195 as an oversized alternative.

Hey Matej you can actually use the MC 400S from walmart which is a purolator pureone PL20195 inside a motorcraft casing, one of the better filters on the market. Im pretty sure its just the 400s thats built by Purolator. $3.69 at walmart I believe

If you want a mobil1 alternative of the PL20195 the M1-209 will fit too. But it has a leaf spring Bypass valve, which is kind of iffy, you want the coil spring for a perfect seal.

So are you saying when you tried the oil filter it started leaking?

Bigsyke
07-07-2009, 12:02 PM
^^^yes. If the silicone anti-drainback valve leaks you will get dry starts. That purolators anti drainback valve leaked. So I would suggest testing one out in the store before you buy it.

Thanks!

Im actually going to test the Pureone PL3001 Double oversized filter to see if it fits. Its almost double the size of the PL20195. This thing is massive.

If it fits, this will be the filter of choice.

Bigsyke
07-13-2009, 04:32 PM
To update, the PL3001 does not fit. The ID/OD of the gasket does not fit, and the oil pressure sender blocks the filter.

I have the PL20195, and the antidrainback is SOLID! I tried all the ones on the shelf, and I could NOT blow through them, they held pressure. EVERY single wix, mobil1, K&N ive tried leaked a little to alot. I snatched all the PL20195's I could and couldnt be happier.

No more startup noises, and the oil pressure light goes off instantly on startup, unlike Wix's which took about 2-5 seconds after startup.

Okay, don't hate me for saying this, but I was told the stock Nissan ones were better than most of the regular ones you find at autozone and shit. Is this correct? How do the stock Nissan oil filters work? And have you tryed the Royal Purple filters?

Bigsyke
09-26-2009, 05:13 PM
Most nissan/honda filters have durable canisters, drainback valves, but the filter media isnt nearly as good as a full synthetic PureOne. Newer Honda filters are made by fram. The old ones were hamp/Toyo Roki. Ive heard the same about nissan's new filters being lower quality.

Plus PureOnes are cheaper, no reason to buy anything else.

I threw a PL20195 on in my last oil change. I can vouch for it, it does work, but I haven't noticed any difference, haha. Don't get discouraged, it might take a couple of tried to thread it, but it does fit. Hell, I know I won't notice a difference, but I know my motor does.

Great discovery.

I only use Purolator Pures and Wix, good stuff. You guys would laugh at the filter size for the Z/G...I use the filter for the 4.0 VQ's found in the trucks because its noticeably bigger. One day doing a filter compatibility search on Wix, the otc filter callout said the filter was used in some nissan vehicles and then it listed half a dozen small tractors and mowers...I lol'd.

As for finding them...someone already said it, but Im pretty sure PepBoys carries them at all stores.

*note the only diff between L and PL is the efficienty rating and the grip. But they are for the same applications. PL being better rating according to the box.

Whats the difference between low port and high port?

The difference is in the head, having to do with the oil jurnals. Older SR's are low port and newer ones are high port. You can tell the diff by the two types of intake mani's.
