searched and there seem to be a ton of different threads with different answers, so just wanted to get a definitive answer before i buy anything
looking at picking up a J30 diff, comes with 5-bolt axles ... will it be a direct fit into my non-ABS, non-vlsd automatic S14? if not, what would i need to make it fit?

I thought 95 or 96 and up had 6-bolt axle flanges that bolt into s-cars. Not too sure though.

Yes, mine was a direct bolt in with no swapping of the axles. The J30 and the S14 are both 6-bolt.
The only thing I had to do was to use the diff bushings from the J30 as the front 2 bushing holes are slightly larger than our originals.

Yep...94 below is 5 bolt.
95+ is 6 bolt.
Get SPL Diff Bushings ($89).Bang the Old ones out of the J30 - put new ones in and your done.

DEFINITIVE ANSWER
92-94 J30 diffs are 5bolt axles, will swap directly into S14 chassis with the axles also. Rear cover is finned, extra capacity.
95-97s are 6bolt, direct swap without axles, easier to do, but has the regular flat cover.
All models are ABS equipped, the snout may be too long and press the driveshaft into the rear transmission seal, it's a question of driveline alignment per car. You can swap the pinion flange if it's a problem.

Should have 6 bolt axles on a hatch.
Either way.ALL that Matters is the SPL DIF bushings if you want it Mounted correctly/Best Possible way.Not Rigged.
