I just purchased a 89' 240 and the kid that owned it previously had done some "cute" wiring for his stereo. The ground had come undone on the sub though and i had a friend over that loves working on and tuning stereos so i told him have at it. He regrounded the sub and got whole system working great and i was completely happy... till i tried to start the car. the car cranks but will not start up at all. i have checked all the fuses and took the opportunity to replace all the spark plugs and wires but i still cannot get the damned thing to start... tried jumping it just for extra power but it cranks and cranks and nothing. Please any ideas are appreciated

also i tried unplugging the entire stereo after, ground and all. No change.

did you check fusible links in relay box by battery? you really have to scrutinize them sometimes becuas is hard to see blown fuse sometimes.

From what i could tell all of those fuses looked fine...
Holy pain to pull the damned things out though...

stereo, lights, seat belts everything electrical in the car that i can tell works just fine i just can't get the damned thing to start. neighbor was sure i was being stupid and that it wasn't cranking only clicking but it is full on cranking just no start...
He said possibility that i ungrounded fuel pump some how when i grounded the sub? Don't see how that could have happened

you will hear the fuel pump in the trunk growling for a few seconds when you turn key to on.

is it really loud enough for me to be able to hear?
not sure i can hear it nothing makes much noise other than the engine cranking

sounds like a fuel problem or a bad ground somewhere. just turn the key to the "ON" position, go back to the trunk area and listen for a buzzing/humming noise....(without cranking the motor)....if you dont hear anything....change the fuel pump :)

okay will definitely attempt that tomorrow at some point and see how it goes...
will update on how things go soon as i check

i'm hoping for a ground problem over replacing it. Is there an easy way of checking for ground problems on fuel pump instead of assuming the worst and replacing?

get a multimeter. digital. cheap. check your fusible links with it also.

So the final verdict
had a neighbor of mine help me at first
Fuel pump...? Works just fine independantly but not with vehicle...
Neither of us had the foggiest clue as to why.
$240 later at the repair shop...
Previous owner had done some electrical work and grounded to the harness and in some fluke while i was doing stereo grounding we blew the main electrical fuse and scorched some wiring under fusilage box... FML lol
