when the oil light is on, it means you have less than 5psi of oil pressure. you probably spun a bearing from the sound of things

thats how i got my sr20det so cheap, 500 bucks for a complete swap, intercooler and such included :) kid drove the car with no oil and it ate a 3rd cylinder rod bearing, had the crank turned, and the rod honed new bearings and its good as new:) sorry to here what happened :(

it could also mean that the wire going to the sending unit ripped it self out and as grounding it self out on ever piece of metal it could touch, making it seem like your car was randomly build and losing pressure at random times while driving.....
ask me how i know?
but yea when the light comes on...... turn that bitch off...
i did just drive my new shoc car about 2.5hrs w/ the oil light on.... some how it still going..

yea you never know tho. i might just say fuck it all and tough it through and keep the car. im just an asshole to my self like that but i know later on it will be worth it.. probably just end up pickin a totally rusted out civic for good mpg . 240sx are where my heart and soul are so dont get the idea im all into honda or something.. but damn ive loved 240sx since i was a child. this shit brings a tear to my eye.

yea i used to fuck around with my old old kade alot like that.
my cousin made the great idea of let run with no oil on purpose while doing peelouts and full drifts at his track. i eventually said ok thats enough after 10 minutes dumped some quarts through the valve cap and drove home about 50 miles to the old garage no problems. ha that ka is pretty tough i wouldent turbo it sohc or dohc but for n/a its a perfect beater ill never forget when my friend put balogni on the valve cover when it was overheating and literally had grill marks from the writing
as of now, my decision is to keep the car. i cant sell it. god. this is horrible but i think im just gotta tough it through and keep it. i love it to much /going to buy the cheapest car i can find after this.

wow.........The oil light ONLY comes on when there is no oil pressure. Has absolutely nothing to do with having to be changed.
wow
Sorry about your situation though. It sucks and all.

sr20det is not durable your motor is done. havent you seen the million and a half threads on here about sr's losing oil and blowing up? thats the whole point behind all the oil pans and coolers and blah blah blah, the motors have piss poor oil flowstock, and if you fuck anything up they will go kaboom, spinning bearings the whole way.
if you heard the motor knocking its done, kiss your short block goodbye

06-29-2009, 09:52 AM
haha yea you dont gotta convince me i know.. my friend that did the swap told me all about it a few months ago. ill probably end up rebuilding the motor or swapping something else in there. who knows.

Should have changed the oil and stopped the car when the light came on. Dumbest thing you can do is keep driving.

I almost did the same thing after leaving this thread and driving to my GF's
got there and the SOHC was loud and multiple tiny valve ticks (i hope valve).
So checked the oil this morning, bone dry.
Took my last $10 and walked to the kragen.
put in 2 quarts, let it run for a bit.
drove it home.
No abnormal sounds now.
i think I may have lucked out, but wont know till after about a week of driving to make sure no soises start up.
I had just checked the oil 2 weeks ago.
little grimy on the pan side though, maybe a tiny leak sprung, or the crazy head of SoCal is just burning it up.
need to figure out how to get my crappy mechanical gauges to work. (theres stupid american sizes with giant sensors)

we will see how sr20dets are durable. (science)
SR's are "durable" against lots of horsepower and detonation.
Not against being run w/o oil. They are pretty fragile in that respect. They like having oil in them. For the most part the whole engine has a poor oiling design, and that is why they had to put the squirters over the cams.

I always check my oil level, always put an extra quart at the track. Just gotta take care of it and it will be fine. No motor is "durable" without oil in it.

filled up with oil.. etc. car now makes a ticking noise coming from valve cover..
tell me more about it?
iammikeol
06-29-2009, 12:04 PM
its not ticking very loud..
who wants to buy what are the offers
ericcastro
06-29-2009, 01:08 PM
if the ticking gets louder, its probably a bearing in the bottom end.
But it could just be something i the head, like how KA's tick on start up sometimes.
Just run it at idle for awhile and see what happenes.
If it gets louder and the bottom end is done, sucks.
But if it is just the a little valve tappage from the head and it goes away, your back to asking full price :)
it might be the mechanical lifters. don't SR's have those? and yeah they run our of oil, they start ticking. well at least with the single cam mechanical lifters.

Sorry to hear man blew a filter off on my KA-t light came on stopped at had it towed everything was fine
iammikeol
06-29-2009, 02:18 PM
idk its kind of a weird sensation.. the car still has power. runs fine lol.
its got that tick though, and its only when you got a steady rpm, cant hear it so much when accelerating.. and its not a powerful KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. its more subtle tick tick tick.. definately damaged goods. i kept it on for a while, drove to pick up some kitty litter from the bloodbath from yesteday.. came home still tickin.. any ideas?

Could be your lifters? After driving the car with no oil the lifters probably took in some air. If that is the case, just remove the valve cover and push on the rocker arms (lifter side) see if it goes down. If you don't notice that then just take the cams off and re-bleed the lifters and take it from there. Hope thats your problem, good luck!
*Search up the forums on how to bleed lifters, its been cover'd many times.
Steve.

well sound doesent come from valve cover upon further inspection
Om1kron
06-29-2009, 06:32 PM
ticking is a spun bearing, for sure.
johngriff
06-29-2009, 06:49 PM
Yeah, so stop driving it and change bearings if there is even a chance to salvage it.

lill piece of advice for ya son...........
you might wanna leave the forced induction motors to folks who actually know how to take care of them.
if you wanna fuck a motor over, there are plenty of KA24E's for people just like you.
its too bad they dont sell training wheels with your SR swaps nowadays, isnt it?
