new pc, need help deciding!!!

alright i have a budget of 1500, but 1700 is the most i can spend. I've come to 2 different pcs.

Both are 1700 shipped to my door. Along with the difference in video card and 1 gb ram, and a little over 100gb in memory, they are both the similar. The hp pc has a wireless network card and the dell doesnt have that option, another reason for the high price is the waranty which im not sure of. I bought a hp laptop with the warranty and i have yet to need it repaired in the 2 years that i''ve had it. A third choice is to build my own pc for 1500, i would need to buy all the components and monitor/keyboard.

Yeah i figured people would come in with the whole Mac suggestion. I had a macbook, but i enjoy pc more, including windows and linux. I am using this pc to play games and watch movies. If i can make a similar pc for less then i would give that a try. I am looking for 8gb or ram, more than 600 gb in my hd, and im looking for a good graphics card that can handle crysis with decent settings. I'm looking for the radeon hd 4850/ 4870 or the nvidia 9800gt.Sli or crossfire are fine or 1gb 4850/4850. What would be the con to building my own pc, i mean all i can really think of is the warranty. Even with that, since im building it i beleive fixing it shouldn't be so hard. Any help would be fine, and i would really appreciate helpful advice.

Can't really say unless you specify your objectives for the said computer.
Both might be decent or overkill depending on what you use your pc for.

If it were me, I'd build my own.

with $1,500 budget, I'd get something along the lines of:

approx $1,300 (before tax, shipping, & misc parts).
wish I could splurge on a 1000w ps & an external hd,
but that's the best I can do with $1,500 budget.

As for the 2 choices, only nice thing is that both are using the i920 chip & mb.
the other stuff is ok, but you could do better.
I'd prob pick the Dell over the HP, just because I'd rather have a better vid card than a larger capacity HD & more ram.
I'd just end up using an external HD or two for additional storage.
Don't think I'd be able to tell with 1 more gb of ram, when you already have 8gb.
Also, personally I've had better luck with Dell products.

What processor you have depends on which maker is best for MB. Personally I would go with an AMD chipset with an Asus MB. Yes a lot of people will tell you that Intel is faster, better, etc. but really the difference between a 3.0 Quadcore Intel and Amd is so neglible that it doesn't really matter. Amd Parts as a whole seem to be a bit cheaper though.

You say you want a computer but like others have said for what? If you are looking at a Radeon 4870 then I would assume gaming. What Visison Garage posted was a good starting place.

thats pretty much what i've come up with, im still not completely sure. It comes out to 1092. not including shipping or mail in rebates. with shipping it'll come out to 1300. If i could i'd like to keep it closer to 1000, but im not sure where to skimp out and i might end up not caring and just spend the 1500. If i wanted to spend less i could get a cheaper lcd, same graphics card but with 512 mb instead.Oh yeah and im not completely sure if the ram is compatable with the mobo. i tried checking on the manufacture's site, but i had no luck.

When looking at this, i was wondering about the ram, on the page it says that it has 4gb of memory. Does that mean the 8gb of ram aren't fully supported or does it not factor the os in which would mean i could use the 8 as long as i have 64bit

so i'll spend 1,141.34. The major difference is that 8gb is the max amount of ram that i can have, while on the other set up i can have up to 16gb

i have 4, ~3.5 of which are being acknowledged by the OS. doesnt make a damn worth of a difference because rarely do i use that much ram, even with the million of applications i keep open.

going with a gaming pc, i can understand some use for ram.. but still i dont know how many games need that much. games typically require 2 things: fast video card #1, and fast cpu #2

i dont have any experience with the new i7 processors. dual core has been good enough for me, but im curious to experiment with the new processors this year.

ive always been content buying intel processors w/ asus motherboards (intel chipset though). kingston or crucial are both fine for memory. as for hard drives, the price differences are negligible between sizes, so buy whatever you want. the only difference i see personally are two things:
1) performance drives like the raptor drives are smaller and recommended solely for OSes, anything that relys on quick access time
2) if you buy a massive drive (1tb+) then buy one with a 5 year warranty, these are the professional grade HDDs as opposed to the more common ones available with only 3 year warranty. otherwise, dont be surprised if you have 1tb of lost data in the next couple years (it can, will and does happen)

buy yourself a nice case (antec) and buy a good psu (zalman) and you shouldnt need much else. you may want to consider going with an upgraded fan too, not sure if the i7 processor fans are as good as some of the aftermarket coolers

Ixfxi is right, my roommate runs engineering software that builds models and he never even gets to use 6 gbs let alone eight.

to answer your question on the RAM. Depending on the OS, your Ram may or may not be utilized. Vista will automatically strip away 1G of ram just on the operating system itself. You should be able to fully use 8gb for gaming and such. I mean even if you never get to use all of it, it wouldnt be bad to have.

I wouldn't get the 1GB unless you plan on running crazy high resolutions or multiple monitors. 512 is sufficient enough for anything 1280 and below.

cheaper than comparative Nvidia cards at least.
I'm using one (w/a i920 chip) and it's not bad for running games like Fallout.

Not really anymore, dvd ripping/encoding, photoshop and games will eat as much ram as you throw at them, going to have to run a 64 bit OS, unfortunately, and that means more compatibility problems, although they seem to get ironed out quite quickly


going with a gaming pc, i can understand some use for ram.. but still i dont know how many games need that much. games typically require 2 things: fast video card #1, and fast cpu #2


this really hasn't been true for a while, esp since most of the new GPU's do physics calculations on-card, instead of through the CPU. The bottleneck for most games is the GPU, since all the heavy lifting the CPU has to run is ai, game code, etc. Pretty much any 2.5+ghz dual core and any quad core is more than enough to play games these days ( you can thank the fixed hardware of the xbox 360 and ps3 for this). Then again with dvd ripping/encoding, the more you have the better. Some GPU's also assist with this, but at the bottom of it, its just hardcore number crunching, and the more speed and pipelines you have, the better

2 what? I think I would opt for a slower CPU and get more ram than to chintz out on the RAM. You can always overclock a CPU to run faster but RAM is RAM. Once all the resources are used up, then stuff starts slowing down. It seems that this will mainly be a gaming PC. So what you should be worried about are the Graphix card, sound, card monitor and whatever house/keyboard best fits the game.

I would go with Nvidia cards if I were you. A lot of games these days are optimized for Nvidia cards. You should run a couple of gtx285 in sli. You mentioned you want to play crysis on decent settings. Well crysis is optimized for nvidia cards. Plus nvidia drivers have a more support for linux than ati drivers - just to let you know even though you're not going to use linux :P

I told you a while ago to go with the 4890. Make sure the company who makes it is worth a damn. HIS is a good brand to go with radeon.

that list you have is pretty solid. As far as cooling, more than likely you will. Differs per setup. Even if you don't "need" it, better to have it anyways.

I mean would you rather a small smic or a big ass front mount? Putting it all together isn't super hard like it used to be, but it isn't super easy either. Everything is pretty much plug and play.

So the only difference that there might be is in the video card, since they are out of the Sapphire Radeon HD4870, i'll upgrade a bit to the Xvapor which has better cooling. I also dont have a dvd burner because they ran out atm, so if they dont restock soon i might get

im not using the speakers on the monitor so they dont really matter. all i can think of atm is the video card, i really dont want to bother with cooling besides the stock cooling so i cant get anything better or that gets hotter than the 4870. I might consider the 4850 if it can keep up with crysis at 1680 x 1050 resolution sinc ei nkow the 4870 can. do i have to overclock it, or could i just install it, install the drivers, and not bother overclocking it.I'm just not sure if buying it and not overclocking it is worth the 10. From what i've been reading this card is good for overclocking due to it being cooler than the other 4870's. Since this card is only 10$ more, i figure i should just buy this since its cooler. Now i can just plug it in, install the drivers and leave it as is correct? If i want to i can also manually increase the fans to 40% at all times so it stays even cooler. any thoughts on this?


and should i buy artic silver 5 thermal compound paste? the processor/mobo combo doesnt specify if it comes with any, but im guessing it does.

You are going the same thing I went through, all these GPU's to choose from. What I did is I went and read reviews about each card. I looked for card makers that had consistently good reviews. There is a reason the HIS 4870 is more expensive than the other 4870's. Not all GPu's run hot. Mine had such good cooling it lowered the temps on my case.

Cooling as I said before can depend on a lot of things. I am running a corsair 620 modular, an HIS Radeon 4850 4gbs of ram, A TB of HD space(three hd's) all of a mircro atx MB and my case(Acer AM5100) runs cool aS fuck on max power.
