misnomer

I just got my car back from letting my mom borrow it for a trip cross state. Before that, I had my rotors turned and new brake pads put on at the shop. Now, though, my front left wheel is making a horrid clunking sound (like rusty metal on rusty metal, or something like that) whenever I hit even the smallest of bumps. The boot around the shock has worn away, though same thing on the seemingly fine right side. Looking inside the engine bay, at the top of the wheel wells, the rubber gasket on both sides has ripped a bit around the outside, though the left side seems to be pushed up about 1/4 inch. Though, to be honest I have no clue what's causing the sound. I can't replicate it by bouncing the front end from pushing on it, only happens witha quick bump.
Needless to say, the car is sitting at home untill I take it to the shop in the next day or two. Anybody here have any ideas on what the problem could be?
