That looks like it is gonna be an interesting machine, hope it works out well for ya!

i've always wondered why there arent more turbo sohc's. Lower compression, and the lower head flow can be made up for by just boosting to higher psi.

I guess because the cars are usually older and its hard to find manifolds for them.

manifolds are the reason you dont see many sohc turbos. ka24e isnt supported heavily by the aftermarket. im not impressed with the current manifolds/price or i would have one on my car. swaps are lame, keep it a 240, and be proud of the 89-90.

The cars being older is a big factor. It's hard to find a SOHC that isn't a bit tired... Heck, even though my SOHC still runs 100%, I wouldn't trust it with a turbo at 140k+.

Most people don't want to bother with the rebuild thing. Easier to just swap in something else.

There is a guy, Adam, on the Southern Ontario boards that runs a highly boosted KA24E. His page is so hard to read cause its all in CAPS. Might see some more KA24ET's in the future. Easy to find the engines. Hard to find with low mileage.

yeah it would be a nice trend if it started, as i have about 5 ka24e's fully rebuilt waiting to be sold. haha jk i hate trends im keeping my secret ka24e project to myself. i wish i had a two-tone one-via instead of my dark black metallic

the real nissan manifold is alright. It is a cast for some other car with the flanges for the KA24E welded on. I have seen better welding and u need to take a die grinder to the thing. but other than that it will work for now.
Thanks

Very nice, i have a sohc and im getting another one to build up very soon, i think its an 89, so it has lower compression or somthing, so better for turbo, im consitering turboing it. It should be interesting also, but im going for the super budget setup, junkyard turbo, the whole 9 yards.

those were my plans 2 months ago, now look at it. the only things i picked up from a junkyard were the 1G bypass valve and a Z32 MAFs. but thats cool, hopefully u have fun on your build up
thanks

I just got her running last night, I had to wait a bit longer than i thought for the intercooler pipe but she started the first try. It was such a beautiful sound. I cant wait til i can get her on a dyno and raise the boost. HAHAHA boost is addicting

I believe 90s had the lower compression of the 89-90s. 90s are supposedly the slowest also.

in my stock 90 i beat a few 91s and later with no mods and even one with an exhaust. the 90s such as mine had the flat top piston which translates to 9.1:1 cr i believe but those were some confusing years.

89 - 9.1:1
90 - 8.6:1

Im turboing my sohc too, here in a few months. im not down with swapping my KA either, when i can easily find another motor for cheap and swap it and keep going, if it blows, but my compression is good, so im gonna run with it. but it takes some deep pockets to say that about the SR.

yup. ka24et baby.
i have got mine up to 16psi and it is amazing.
still have yet to dyno.
cant wait.
good luck

what kind of manifold is that?
custom?

16PSI!? Have you touched the bottom end yet? Damn, even with the lower c/r, I'd be afraid of blowing it that high.

What are you using for fuel delivery?

16 psi, thats amazing. let us know as soon as you get it on a dyno!! or the 1/4.

To clarify the confusion on the 89-90 KAE's...here is the deal..

From 7-88 to 3-89, 240SX's came equipped with the higher compression flat top pistons. Their was a recall that had to do with drivablity (probably too many people scared of the torque of the original set-up and clutch skipping, tire roasting by accident) in which the engine was modifyed on nissans nickle.

The modification to my knowledge was installing new pistons that were lower compression and a temperature sensor on the side of the factory airbox and re-mapping the ecu (detuning).

All subsequent 240SX's after the build of 3-89 were delivered with the lower compression engine. The higher compression engine without the recall is a monster and can run very high RPM's and around 30 more HP is easy to get. With head mods (port, polish, shaving to raise compression, larger injectors, larger fuel pump, cam angle mods (new cam) and modding the MAFS and with the underive pulleys, 200HP KAE is the norm.

How many original KAE's with flat-top pistons are left, remains to be seen. To tell if the KAE is modded to lower compression, look for the temperature sensor located on the air box , driver side, on the rear of it...facing the front of the car.

Hope this helps.

Also....even though the DOHC is a higher horespower engine (better intake manifold, better flowing heads) it is not uncommon for someone in an 89 to "whup-up" on a 91-98 in a drag race.

I ran the piss out of a stock 95 and all I could muster was 15.8 @ 87MPH. My KAE N/A with the above mods ran under 15 consistantly. It is nice to pull off from an old IROC Camero V-8 and I have done it by more than 3 car lengths...but it was an automatic compared to a 5 speed.

The KAE can be a killer. The KAET should easily compete with an SR20DET and if careful attention to the head is employed, 8KRPM with a KAE is not unheard of...and making power up there.

16 psi is awesome. i have ran a 13.6 at 11 psi with no lsd and 195 passenger tires so i am sure i would be in the 12s at 16 with drag radials. the motor is rebuilt and i have je pistons(8.5:1cr). and i am running a realnissan.com manifold for now (works great)
good luck to all u other ka24et lovers.:D
Thanks
