Just picked up my 95 240sx monday and previous owner told me that often there would be a knock or thump while driving. He worked at a nissan dealership but didn't seem too intelligent. Anyways he claimed the problem was rear bushings of some sort? I only hear the knock when I downshift and comes from the rear end. Most often when i downshift from 5th to 4th and 4th to 3rd. The car is stock other than full 3" straightpipe exhaust. Opinions? How many bushings are in the rear of the car? I would think it would be a tranny problem or clutch problem because it only occurs when i downshift. Again it sounds like a loud thump. Clutch is brand new on the car. Thanks

it could be a number of things.
Check your subframe bushings and driveshaft carrier bearing/bushing first.

it's most likely your subframe bushings. type in subframe bushings in search bar.. you'll find lots of info.
there's like 3 different ways to solve this problem:
1. subframe collars
2. spacers
3. or solid bushings

thanks. just read up a little more and plan on removing the subframe and installing new aluminum bushings. Anything else I should do while the subframe is removed?
edit: not going with aluminum after reading more because it will transfer noise and vibrations into the cabin. The goal is a smooth rides with smooth shifting. opinions for best kind of rear bushings that fit this description?
