Well, I co-op at a shop where i assist mechanics on imports, mainly subarus. I was telling one of the mechanics about how I am going to be buying an s13 240sx coupe soon. Then he started telling me that they are terrible cars. Now, I respect this guy because he knows an incredible amount about all different cars. He owned an s13 coupe at one point and said he hated it. Although he's not into the import scene, he drives a 1983 Ferrari 308 Gts-i. anywho, he was telling me that the tranny's are weak, the diff is garbage and there are electrical gremlins in the car. Man, when I heard him saying all this stuff, I was dissapointed. I have never heard any of these problems being discussed on this forum, and ive heard its a very reliable car. I know, you guys are going to say "all cars have their problems", but the guy thoroughly hates the car. I cant understand it! I just needed to get that out.

P.S. - this is not changing my decision, im still buying my beloved coupe!

Well from the few owners of Older Nissans I know. They all seem to have problems after the 100k mark, especially electrical ones. Most people with the digital speedo's will let you know and some of the people with power windows, etc too.

But the thing I do not know on all of these cases is how they treated their car in the first place, which is the most important factor. So just inspect well before you buy one and hope for the best.

I haven't had electric, tranny or differential problems and I had over 120k on the car before I swapped.

The only electrical problem that i have had was a broke wire in my distributer. But other than that nothing.

I just bought my 91 coupe with 129k on it, and it doesn't SEEM to have any problems with it...

I can't drive it much till i sell my other car, 2000 Mazda Protege for 6700 (plug), but so far i haven't seen anything wrong with besides a little smoke....

But with a swap right on the way after I sell my other car, who cares about a little smoke. Anyways, just wanted to let you know that some have problems, but some don't such as mine.

Good luck and just make sure to wait till you find the perfect one for you, don't settle for less.

My car has 115k and it still runs great. No problems anywhere. Everything and I mean everything still works great. I have a guy like that that works at Carmax. He's a bad ass when it comes to imports and tells me the same thing about how this car is crap or this car is crap. I say... who gives a damn?! Let's just drink beer and party!!!!

Don't drink and drive kids... Smokey the Bear told me so... or I think it was him...

That's right... it was Jesus!!!!

our differentials ARE a$s. Most of them are open, too, which would explain why. :o Actually that sounded pretty bad. But you all know what I meant! (Get your heads out of the gutter! )

Electrical problems... HUD is famous, a couple of cars have experienced bad grounds in the engine bay (just behind fuel rail) causing fluctuating idles, but that's not tooo common and easy to fix. Other than those, I've not heard of any recurring serious problems on our cars, really.

That said, it sounds like he got a lemon. :p sucks to be him, 'cause he's the one missing out!

This guy thinks 240s are unreliable and he drives an early 80s Ferrari? Man, those are NOTORIOUS for being maintenance-retarded. He obviously has two things going for him:

1. A distorted view of reality
2. He owned a lemon of a 240

The trannies are stout. The electrical system is as good as any Japanese car (all my wires still work and the car is 14 years old). The diff is stout enough for over 400 hp.

So basically, he don't know jack. Don't listen to this Ferrari-driving, Earl Grey Tea-drinking, fhag. :p

You'll find techs with their noses stuck so far up their asses that you can't seem to distinguish where one beings and the other ends. They are overly opinionated and think that they know everything there is to know about any car in the world. Given, you might find some electrical problems with your car. Might... you never know. Depends on your luck, but then again that's how most early '90s and late '80s Nissans were. Nissan is notorious for electrical problems. Mechanical, you should have no problems with... It's up to you how your'e gonna take what he has to say.

P.S. This posted by S13Grl. This stupid PC only likes Mark and won't let me log him out. Sorry...

only problems i've had are with my tranny, and little problems due to lack of regular maintenance that were fixed very easily. hell i'm not a mechanic and even i can take care of most/all of these problems myself...

i don't see how any person with basic mechanical knowledge can call a 240 unreliable

i think his problem was that he had a coupe instead of a hatch :p

I agree. Anyone driving around in an old Ferrari, as cool as that may be, has absolutely NO BUSINESS dogging on other cars for their "gremlins".
