So i am purchasing a vlsd tomorrow from a 180sx, I know one way to check to see if its vlsd is to see if one axle turns the other one should turn with it, I was also curious if there is going to be one of those beautiful yellow VLSD stickers on it? I know the J30's have a VLSD sticker and i think i have seen some n/a 300's with them but am unsure if the 180's do...

Well like you said its a sticker. So its possible that it came off. If you spin the axle the other should spin in the same direction. An open diff will spin in the opposite direction.

just make sure when the sides both spin that its not a welded diff and actually a vlsd.

youd ba able to tell if its welded or a vlsd when you turned it.

if its really out of a 180sx it should have an over sized diff cover that looks totally different than the stock 240 diff covers and it should have a bunch of cooling fins on it, also if ur worried its a welded diff u can grab both axles and spin them opposite directions, if u can't then its not a VLSD, and of course if u grab one axle and spin it and the other one spins the other direction by itself then its open, all in all welded diffs are way more fun in my opinion, i used to swear by my vlsd until i got stock diff and welded it up, after that i couldn't believe i hadn't done it sooner haha

easiest way to test is to only jack up 1 side and turn the wheel, if it turns freely its an open diff, if it turns with resistance then its a VLSD, if it doesnt turn at all then its a welded diff.

sorry to bump an older thread but what if the fluid has been drained from the diff? would a vlsd acts as open diff since there is NO viscous fluid to lock the gears? or they always have the same behavior regardless of fluid or not? thanks for the help!

even if you drain the fluid the shafts will still turn at the same time, viscous refers to they type of clutch pack inside the gears, theres still fluid that goes inside the pumpkin around the gears, and thats what you would be draining.

It will still operate normally, the Viscous coupling is a self sealed unit so diff fluid has nothing to do with with locking abilities
