240 cartoon style

a vector-based program would really do much nicer than photoshop, etc :D lines are much cleaner, etc and everything is *calculated* instead of drawn.

the blue hatch is obviously from a pixel-based program :)

u can basically do the same with Flash. for the red 180. they have tutorials on how to color with Flash and u get the same results.

I agree... using something like adobe illustrator, which isn't that hard to use, can make really nice cartoony/cel shaded 240's/Silvias/180's... or any other thing

u guys got it all wrong..BoA Kwan is my GF!! stay away young fools. haha yea Chokets is pretty much right. she was rockin that **** since 15!! and shes now 17! she sings in japanese/chinese/english as well as korean. man she aint gonna fade out like the spears girl. spears faded out on like her 2nd album. Boa has like 4-5 albums out already and still going strong. again stay away people! [holding a gun]

OH and guys, don't try to draw straight lines with a mouse. It's nearly impossible. Use the pen tool! It's maybe the most useful tool in photoshop. It's hard, but when you start getting it down there's no limit to what you can do.

wow...i really like how you did the preludes left headlight. Looks real nice. And that integra looks really good. especially impresseive that you didn't use the pen tool. Good job. Yeah, the pen tool rules for this stuff, especially on the shadows and highlights that you cant fill in with the paint bucket. And as you can tell by my feable attempt, I cannot draw circles for **** in photoshop. The car I used had kouki/type x/ whatever-the-hell tail lights on it, but I couldnt get the circle parts to look right. Oh, and I think Bbandit may have figured it out:D, but on super complicated parts you can cheat and use the cutout filter

Definitely not perfect circles.

I used the pen tool. I tried smoothing the spline path but I realized it was easier just to make compund curves using short straight sections rather than manipulating the path to fit the curve.

I was checking out my Robotech: Battlecry game on PS2 and they seem to like using short stright sections to define curves rather than long smooth pieces. It gives it more of a jagged, cartoony flavor I think.

I started working on a 240 pic a while ago, this thread kinda inspired me to finish coloring it! I was doing all my lines in Illustrator though. Vector programs rock for more precise line drawings.

You want to use the pen tool so that you can get a smooth outline. With the pen tool, the shapes you can get are limitless. When you use the pen tool, you make a path. Then right click once you're happy with your path. (Right clicking brings up a menu that allows you to do different things. IE color along path, fill in path, make selection inside path, etc.) That's a very basic tutorial on how to use the pen tool in photoshop anyway. Illustrator is a little different, but not much.

The picture I did was all done in photoshop. The next one i do will be a mixture of both photoshop and illustrator.

easy man..all u do is import the pic into layer 1, lock it use the line tool no LOCK..make layer 2 and start to draw straight lines and bend it to the shape..easy as that..

Ok, I've been trying to use driftaholic's guide.. here's what I've got so far.

I'm getting the hang of outlining kind of.. but I really suck at shadowing. Everytime I make a shadow I decide it's too big and blotchy and erase it so I've only got little shadows that look out of place here and there. Next time I'm picking a picture with more easily defined shadows and highlights. :p

yeah choosing pics with well defined shadows makes it a lot easier. i've noticed that professionally shot pics are also a million times easier to do than average people's digicam or scanned pics

I suck at this stuff, i spent 2 hours and i couldnt get the pen tool to just draw a line, it kept makin a shape. Driftaholic, can u plz be more specific and such? Im no photoshop junkie and need a few pointers here and there. Thx.

make your curve with the pen tool, right click and choose "stroke path." then you can choose which tool to stroke with. i use the bush on 2px. make sure to set the tool how you want it BEFORE stroking though.

If you have PS7...

Your problem is that you've got the shape thing selected on pen tool. Select the pen tool and then look up in the top left corner of the screen and the first option should be selected. It's called "Create shape vector" or something to do with shapes. You've got to click the second option up there, that will let you just draw lines. I'm sorry I don't remember what they're called and I'm too lazy to check in Photoshop cause it takes like 10 minutes to load. :p
