any advantages?
any opinions?
any experiences???

I wasn't aware there was such thing as an air cooled turbo.
Can you please explain?

edit: Turbos are usually oil and(/or) water cooled.

water cooling on a turbo is only to help prevent oil coking, i'm told.

I've heard that too. Often times, just having the oil lines on will be fine to cool the turbo. You may want to leave the engine idling for a while longer after hard runs though, if you're not using water lines.
Again, this is just "what I hear". :D

adey I just finished reading "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell and in there he used a turbo called an "Aerocharger" on 2 of the project cars. Its a VATN (variable area turbine nozzle) ball bearing turbo. Requires no oil or coolant lines either. Pretty neat stuff but $$$. Anyway here is the website (although there is almost no info on there). Aerocharger (http://www.aerocharger.com/)
They have contact info for the dealers and I am sure you could find out a little more from them.

i talked to charlie at CMR Turbos here in tampa on thursday and he told me water cooled is the way to go, helps reduce turbine temperatures by 200 degrees

the thing with water cooling is that it weighs quite a bit having all that water around, as well as you need to have water IC's installed an everything. Lots of pipes.

and there is no way a VATN turbo could not need cooling at all. a VATN turbo's claim to fame is that it can make more power more efficiently than a normal turbo since it can change its size depending on its speed.

yes indeedy theres a turbo that self cools in

the book of corky
chapter 18 verse 4 (CORKY18:4)
turbocharging
notice diagram 18-10... the turbo has no oil line fittings.

if you read on in the holy bible of turbocharging you'll notice that corkey bell does not attach any oil anything to this unit... I WANT ONE... =p

seek ye first the kingdom of forced induction

if you dont have this book... buy it... now... best upgrade ive done so far

edit: the aerocharger IS oil cooled however it self lubricates and therefor does not need any oil pan tapping, etc. notice how corkey bell says to make sure to fill the turbo with oil and then plug it.

i think he ment the intercooler....air to water or air to air...

btw...that turbo is nutz with a z!

wouldnt u run the water from the radiator to the the turbo?

Maeda

that might work(?) but thats not how its done...
water goes to the intercooler... or for water cooled turbos it runs through the turbo to help cool the oil...

seriously read maximum boost...

must be a really special IC to do that and cost $$$$

im talking about stock water cooled SR's
just have to have new lines made to adapt to new turbo
location

shouldnt be more than $50
