I wrote my favorite SCC writer, Dave Coleman, this letter:

In your May 2003 article I read that the RX-8 uses the same 6-speed as the S15 Silvia. And it is generally confirmed that the 6-speed transmission is the older S13 and S14 5-speed with another gear jammed in it. So is Nissan selling transmissions to Mazda? I'm 96% sure that Nissan manufactures the transmission. Or is there another company that is selling the transmissions to both companies? Please clear this up, because I hope you guys didn't publish that to just fill some space.

And he wrote back:

Nope, it's a different transmission made by Aisin, I believe. No
relationship between the 5 and 6 speed as far as i know.

So............?

he's right. it's made by Aisin. they also use the same tranny in the miata. and i think, except for the shift linkage, the gearbox is the same for the SE-R Spec-V as well.

However, these cars use different gear ratios...but the case and whatnot is the same.

special made tranny, kinda like the skyline tranny, not made by nissan, along with the 6speed supra tranny, super expensive to buy or fix/replace. Their alright thought.

Then what happened to all of this talk about the six-speed is weak because it's just the 5 case with another gear jammed in it. Is that still true? Hogwash?

yes, myth. that was all speculation over the internet. people have had the 6-speed installed with high power applications and no magical disasters. however, by default, if the 6-speed tranny fits in the same space occupied by the 5-speed, it obviously has smaller gears (something's got to give).

does that answer your question? if you want a 6-speed with your SR, go for it. i'd love one myself, simply for the fact that the 6th gear is a nice, low 0.767:1 6th gear. That would be much better for the highway than my 0.838:1 SR 5th gear (KA has 0.759:1 5th).

I really REALLY doubt that the Miata and SE-R share tranny's, seeing that the SE-R is FWD :p The SE-R does share its tranny with the Maxima.

I know, I was thinking the same thing, but I *swear* I read that a while back. Gears mounted on shafts are the same for FWD and RWD trannies...it's the case that matters. And that's exactly what I meant.

But I could be wrong...:D
