I'm worried that the wheel will be rubbing into the coilover in bumps or turns, but would like to avoid running spacers if possible.

Car, wheel and tire dimensions are S13, 17x9.5 +17, and 245/35/17 if that helps. The gap goes from a hair more than 1/4 of an inch to nearly 3/8 when I'm using the spacer.

I don't want to find out that I'm wrong by running w/o the spacer and scratching up the inside of my wheel/tire.

If it doesn't rub without the spacer, then it doesn't rub. You should be fine.

Unless you're running on a flat tire there will never be enough sidewall flex to ever rub the coilover.
