So my cars cd player ate one of my cds and wont give it back. I have a beginning audio set up and I am going to start looking around for another head unit. Any suggestion I have been seeing that Eclipse is a pretty good brand for stereo, and input would be awesome

pioneer head unit, 4 channel amp, good mids
you want something that has good controls, and you want power from an external source.

Ugh, keep the Pioneer/Alpine argument out of threads regarding audio systems please.

He beat me to it. Go with this recipe and you can't fail.

Pioneer USA - Pioneer CD Receivers (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/In-Dash/CD-Players/Pioneer/DEH-P7100BT)

Less money still good though

Pioneer USA - Premier CD Receivers (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/In-Dash/CD-Players/Premier/DEH-P610BT)

In my opinion if you want a common brand, high quality head unit, pick up either a Alpine, Eclipse, or Pioneer. They are all awesome brands. I myself am sworn on Alpine. That is all I will run now. I have had pioneer in the past and they are good too, but I just like Alpine. Those two are kind of like coke and pepsi, or miller and lincoln...everyone has their preference. I personally haven't ran Eclipse. I have installed them in friends cars and they were nice. I was going to pick one up but went for another alpine instead.

If you want to possibly start building a decent stereo setup further down the line get a headunit that you will be able to build on. Pay attention to the number of pre-outs (to run an external amp) and the voltage of the pre-outs. The higher the voltage, the cleaner the signal, the better the sound.

I have been out of the car audio scene for a couple years now so I'm not really up on the times..I don't really know whats out there right now.

What are you looking for in a head unit? Just something to play cd's or maybe plug your Ipod in to?

I've had the alpine w205 for a long time in my truck and its pretty much awesome. Has the dockable blackbird navigation, which overall makes it more expensive, but you can take it out and bring it with you in another car. You should really look into that. Pioneer is good as well, but I think Alpine has always made good quality headunits.

I also had all Alpine Type-R separates and a 10" Alpine Type-R sub (in my truck), which sounded great with a 5 channel Alpine PDX amp :D

Don't get me wrong though, Alpine, Pioneer, Eclipse... They're all going to be good.

Pioneer DEH-P5000UB (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=18750)

Pioneer Premier DEH-P500UB (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=18869)

Alpine CDA-9884 (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=18727)

Alpine CDA-9886 (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=18771)

Eclipse CD5100 (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=20348)

Out of those, I would go with one of the Pioneers for sure. They both have the features you will want and 4volt preouts (compared to 2volt on the CDA-9884 and on the Eclipse) The CDA-9886 has the 4 volt pre-outs, but it is also $100 more. For the price and the features, you can't beat those Pioneers.

So verdict says: Pioneer.

Although I'm still a sucker for Alpine haha
