i had trouble at first too. then i just dropped the upper oilpan on my SR (the aluminum part).

then the rear main seal and the housing came right out.

are you talking about getting the actual seal itself out from the housing thingy?

yeah if you're talking about that, then you just need to lightly tap it out.

take tiny screw driver wedge inbetween seal and cover,
tap in with hammer to make dent in seal to stick scribe in to pry out
or use screw driver, be be carful not to chip the cover

*sigh*rear seal is in the back of the engine under the flywheel and creates a seal around the crankshaft. to get to it you have to remove your transmisssion and clutch+flywheel... *sigh*

Firstly, it's my opinion if you don't know what a rear main seal is, you aren't a grease monkey. That being said, here's a picture of what it looks like and a couple how-tos on changing it. So here ya go.

There's a how-to here (which is where the pic came from) - Rear Main Seal Replacement: 240sx Articles: Nissan Forums / Infiniti Forums - NICOclub (http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/360453) and here (no pics, but the easier way IMO) - Technical Articles: Replacing Front and Rear Seals (http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=242582)

You don't need to remove the seal carrier to get the seal out. Just a seal puller.

http://www.eurocarparts.com/sealey/images/AK7000.jpg
Then when you get ready to reinstall the new seal, take a 1/4" drive extension and use it as a drift to drive the new seal in. Just work it around the seal and you should be fine. Pulling the carrier out without unbolting the oil pan can lead to leakage around the bottom of the carrier.

i hammer a small flathead through the middle of it and pry... pretty easy actually. just be careful not to go all the way through it

I know, that's why the 2nd way is my preferred way - no need to take out the carrier.

Seriously, the FSM has damn near everything you need to know about the motor in it.
