Does anyone know the location of the catalytic converter on a '97 240SX with the stock KA24DE engine and what it looks like?

S14's may be (and probably are) different, but the cat on my S13 is directly after the exhaust manifold.

actually, from reading the freshalloy message boards...Doesn't the S14 have 2 cats?

The cat on the 97 is right under the drivers seat.

Yup, S14 has to cats.. well kinda.
The first cat is the real cat. The second one that's easily visible from under the car is the fake cat. It's hollow.

Thanks a lot to everyone. A friend and I were looking for the cat under my car. We found what we though was the cat, but when we took it off from the exhaust piping, it was hollow. What a waste of time! At least now we know where the real cat is. thanks.

The real cat on the s14 is right after the header, and the one right below your driver seat is only a "dummy" cat, which is the same location of a real cat on a s13.

why would they put a fake Cat on the car?

the "second cat" is the resonator. it keeps the exhaust note nice and quiet.
Don't take your real cat off. There is an o2 sensor on it and removeing it can cauz ecu errors unless you get your ecu reprogrammed.

what about removing the psuedo cat any forseen problems?
It'll get loud, but I don't think it hurts anything. Correct me if I'm wrong but aftermarket exhaust dosen't have the psudo cat, so I'll think you'll be fine takeing it off. I'm not sure if it will help you any though...

One of my friends said that my car could use a cleaned-out cat. If we were to somehow take the cat off and clean it out, will that give me any more power?
Also, I was wondering if the cat on a '97 240sx is welded on or bolted on. Because if it's bolted on, we (theoretically) should be able to take it off. If it's welded, I'll just go tinker with some other part of my car instead -=^_^=-
You should be able to tell by looking at it and I'm way to lazy to go look for you <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> but I think I remember someone saying its welded, I'm probably wrong though.

i've hollowed out my cat. hopefully i've gotten 1-2 hp out of it, but i don't know for sure. cat-back exhausts will replace the resonator. they'll usually have a resonator, but its usually just for looks. my 5zigen just has a big bump that kinda looks like a resonator, but it really serves no purpose.
if you just remove the stock resonator, that shouldnt give you any hp just cause you still have a stock exhaust, which is the limiting factor
