smog is also a visual check
unless your SR looks like a KA

then no.

and do u have all your evap lines and shit hooked up? charcoal canister?

generally the thing you fail on is the visual not the sniffer.

if your car is tuned and running properly and has a cat that is up to temperature on it it should pass the sniffer test alright.

for some reason, the guy that does my smog check doesnt even bother looking under the hood (no visuals)! me and all my friends gone to him time and time again. as long as it passes smog, thats all he cares about! evap lines or canister is not hooked up

a stock sr w/ all the emssions shit hooked up will pass
but u really gotta hook everything up
japan is just as strict, if not more, then CA.
at least we don't have shaken (christ, we'd all be fucked then)

SR's usually run cleaner then KA's as far as the sniffer. As long as you have a Cat and it's running properly I see no problem in passing the sniffer.

Still doesn't make it legal. Your smog guy is not doing a proper inspection.

Have you considered a metal core catalytic converter? My stock cat and new catco 3" cat went bad from running slightly rich (sr w/front mount and 3" exhaust). Get a stock 240 exhaust and weld it in the center of the pipes and bolt it on. It's basically running 2 cats, but I don't know if that would work. You could always put a test pipe on so it seems like there is 1 cat.

TELL ME FUCKING ABOUT IT!!! They failed the R33 for old road tax sticker on the front window, rear license plate missing a bolt (so I cant flip the plates up and down), cracked ball joint bushing and they cant see the engine stamp. FUCKING RETARDED!!!

Hi,

we have very strict annual smog/emissions check over here with the passing levels being the same as in Japan.
My SR is not "built" excepts for tomei poncams.
I have 740cc, gt2871, 3" exhaust, PowerFC and a wedsport 3" metal cat I bought from japan. I do not have the evap/egr stuff at all as they were removed a long time ago.
I pass with flying colors on all 4 gases they check and lambda hooked up gets me passed the afr check for idle and and 3k.

I run the cat all the time as it doesnt really hurt performance all that much if at all.

Actually I do have a smog guy.

If you have a "smog guy" why the hell did you even make this thread.

His smog guy isn't someone who just rubber stamps it for $200. It's a guy that is to lazy to do the visual and only does the smog test.

The search part comes in that many people have passed sniffers with and SR and stock cat easily. You are not re-inventing the wheel here. It has been done.

i was going to do this, or something else.
so since this has already been done, here's something else.

you live in a police state. if you move, you don't have to worry about silly shit like this. i could replace my engine with a bucket of used oil on fire and still get tags.

I can see why you would want to do this. It is much easier to find a smog guy that is willing to "let it slide" on the visual then it is to find someone to cleanpipe the car. What it all really depends on is your tune. If you have a good tune it should pass with a normal cat on it. I would personally get a random tech cat, a really good tune and see how it runs. I personally don't see any point whatsoever to eliminating the evap system. SR's do have an evap system, it affects power none at all, and if it is disconnected you can smell the gas fumes venting from the tank. Fucking stupid to not hook it up IMO. I highly encourage this kind of "tuning". Keeping the engine so that all the factory smog equipment is present and the car passes the sniffer test is just smart. It's better for the environment, doesn't hurt power, doesn't weigh much, and makes it considerably easier to get a smog. All you guys in here just saying "It's an sr and it's not legal anyways, so why bother?" are dumbasses.

All you guys in here just saying "It's an sr and it's not legal anyways, so why bother?" are dumbasses. It's because at the end of the day, when you get pulled over and reffed you get fucked the same way anyway, so why bother?

They can give a shit less if you actually made the effort to pass the sniffer.

I'm not disagreeing with what you said, but I'm stating a fact.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked yet.

Curse all of you for posting long cat. LOL.

OP what is the point of this thread?

If you have a smog hook up guy and he's passed your car before, why would he not do it now?

Your attitude towards all the people that aren't kissing your ass or spoon feeding you is stupid and making you look like a kid.

Why not make it easy to smog untill you get pulled over and "popped"? Getting "popped" is not that common, having to get a smog IS that common. There is no reason that you couldn't run a SR under the radar for YEARS as long as you don't get flashy. Run a "mid-mount" intercooler, paint it black, recirculate the BOV, run a quiet exhaust, and don't have a big dumb looking bodykit all slammed and shit.I am all for building a car like that, maybe I'll build one myself..........

Mmmmmmmmm, two-tone coupe!

I passed the sniffer today with flying colors with a 450+whp SR with a Catco catalytic converter and STOCK plugs. I found that to be the secret... for my engine at least. I could get it to barely pass with the BKR8EIXs if I got the tune perfect. I found that a set of BKR6Es make it near impossible to fail.

So guys has anyone here had an rb25 swapped car pass the sniffer test? Obviously an obd1 car. Im considering putting a cat on our RB car as my smog guy also doesnt care about visual especially since he knows me. All he cares is that it passes the sniffer test.
