View Full Version : Accidentally wired $6mil , what would you do?

So there is an article about a couple that was accidentally wired $6mil, instead of $6000 for a loan from the bank. They leave the country only to be traced via Facebook status updates.

Article here: Facebook Update Exposes Couple's Bank Fraud Romp (http://www.switched.com/2009/05/26/facebook-update-exposes-couples-bank-fraud-romp/)

That had me wondering...why would they flee after getting this money and also do some thing as blatantly traceable? :ugh:

If any of you were in the same situation were the bank accidentally wired you $6mil, what would you do?

If it was me, I would most likely report it because if I don't, I know the FBI or IRS is bound to be looking for me. :keke:

You have got to be SO up your ass to think you could get away with it.

The bank isn't going to sit on their thumb when they make a mistake.

Bank error in your favor. Collect $6,000,000.

I would "accidentally" spend said 6 million very very quickly.

When the bank calls and says, "Yeah, so we wired you 6 million by mistake, we'll be needing that back now." You just reply, "Yeah, so I spent that 6 million by mistake... Sorry, my bad."

Busted for what? They fucked up. Leave the country lol.. better yet, off shore bank accounts.

When we fuck up, does the bank cut us any slack? Don't think so.

Immediately wire the money to the Caymans. Would never work, but I would try.

Probably spend about 50k on w/e car i want and wait until the bank contacts me, and give them back w.e the diff is out of the 6 mil, if they ask for that 50k i'm taking them to court in defense of a blatant lie such as "i wanted the car bad enough to go 50k in overdraft", how are they gonna prove it? And i think 50k out of 6 mil the bank made a mistake on can be given to me for going through the hassle of going through it.

I would have signed a contract/loan agreement for $6g not $6M, so i'd pay back my agreed amount, "lawyer up" and prep for the oncoming civil suit.
wouldn't leave the country, wouldn't go spend crazy. but would try to keep the money legally.

I'd report it.

Chances are the bank would give you SOME money, probably like $500 or $1000.

Clear conscious and plus you'd NEVER get away with it.

I'm not really into stealing, so I'd make everything right. Just because somebody made a mistake doesn't give you the right to go spending $6 million.

Don't fuck with people's money, especially when they have a lot of it. You'll end up in prison if you're lucky.

blow it all on some safe stock that fluctuates by 1% dtd, and speculate.
I'm sure there are better short term investment oppurtunities with that much capital.
best case scenario i make a couple grand.
worst case scenario i lose a couple grand.

no point running away b/c they will find you, facebook or not.

can you cash out that much? i'd take it all in hundreds and tell them good luck.

...but not before paying the loan off very early.

If the ATM gives you an extra $20, the bank damn well knows about it and will make sure it's back in their hands and accounted for.

$6,000,000 ?

I really hope you guys are just doing "joke" answers.

I remember when my bank was putting my money into someones else's account on accident.

Imagine what it was like when I walked in and said, "My bank account doesn't have as much money as it should".

Too them a while to sort it out and figure out I wasn't telling a lie.

I'd have called 'em up before they realized. $6mil is awesome, but having to give it back anyway negates it. Giving it back and getting a reward, is actual free money you CAN keep and spend the way you want. ;) That is, unless the bank is a tightass retard bank.

!Zar!
05-26-2009, 10:59 PM
Why would the bank give you a reward?

They notice when $1.00 is missing.

You think they wouldn't notice when $6,000,000 is gone?

get a bunch off ATM account balances receipts with the $6 mil and some with out, write my number on the back of them. pass them out to hot chicks, wait for the phone calls:ddog:

most banks have a contract that says if money is accidently put in your account they have one year to account for it and if they dont it becomes your money

They got ~$2million out of the ATM before the bank caught on.

Wow, that would be nice, and honesty i would keep 10 grand of it to pay debt off and give the rest back to the bank, i would tell them there mistake not mine, just be happy your getting most of it back lol...

It's quite funny how many of you are so damn naive in this Thread.

You guys actually think the bank is going to say, "Whoops, our bad! Sure, keep that $10,000 or $1M off the top"? Seriously?

My faith in intellignet society is fading.

You WILL be held accountable for every cent of that money, and you will spend however long it takes to get it all back, rotting in a cell.

Donate it to charity.

i wonder what would happen.

or the other interesting point brought up was the whole put it in a savings account, make a couple hundred bucks at least and possibly a few thousand, and promptly return the money back to the bank before they contacted you, which would be ridiculously tricky if not impossible to time it correctly.

^^^

short term investment/speculation is really the only legit way to profiteer from this type of circumstance.
The most important thing is how long does it take for the bank to find out you have their $$$,
and how soon you have to pay it back.

Once my bank WAMU gave me $1,000 by mistake.
It took them approx 1 month to ask for it back.

An OPTIMISTIC Savings account interest rate would be like a 5% APR
Maybe unrealistically high these days, but not implausible either.
But say you earn interest for 1 month.
That's like 5% divided by 12, which is like 0.416%
0.416% of 6,000,000 is like $25,000.

Not bad actually as no-gamble return, if you get to keep it.

go to your bank and open a CD with it and lock up that $6 million for a few months. It would be funny because they sent you the $ and you lock it up and for them to take it back out, it might violate a security law or two.

Koopa Troopa
05-27-2009, 02:17 AM
Yeah, I think a CD would be the best way to do it or at least a high yield savings account. That way the money isn't spent and is easily accessible if they ask for it back. However if you move 50,000 into an account you'll raise a lot of eyebrows much less 6 mil.

SimpleS14
05-27-2009, 06:56 AM
I don't see the bank offering a reward in this case. Maybe, just maybe, a reduced interest rate on a loan and a t-shirt. :keke:

Something very similar can happen with day trading stocks.

I also don't see how you can get away with the CD method. If you get capital over 9K infused into an account, you have to report it to IRS to state the source of funds or else you get flagged.

I'd call it in. I used to work for a bank, and with small mistakes, the bank took the money back with no hesitation. With 6m they'd find you and make you pay it back, or put you in jail for grand theft or something of the sort.

Good job..... I'm sure that is going to make the bank happier about the whole situation and easier on the people. :rolls eyes guy here:

Again...

If the bank "loses" $6,000,000 you damn well better know they are going to get it back one way or another, legal or otherwise.

Why do people not understand that this IS a "what if" thread, seriously.

funny thing is something like this happened to my acct teach, and what he did was get a letter verifying that the amount was correct, or something along those lines, and even then they didnt catch it, so he opeded a CD and waited, then like a year lated a lawyer for the bank called him and was like wtf why are you trying to steal from the bank, you a CPA you should know better, and he was like well here's this letter you (the bank) sent me stating that everything was correct, and then he was like the money is still at your bank, blah blah blah, and i think he got to keep the difference

There's about 2 or 3 stories like this every year. Everytime I read one, the bank wins. Always. The ones who try to take the money get in deep shit. The ones who actually report the error usually get a reward (depending on the size of the error).

Truth.

Even though it's their fault they will always get it back.

If I was to make a mistake however, like sending money to the wrong account, I'm fucked up shit creek.

I would transfer that money so fast into numerous accounts, its not even funny. Jump on the first flight I can get to Philippines, get as much of the cash out into my pocket, bribe a couple of people who could potentially look for me, disappear into one of the secluded islands in the Visayan Region.
