quick question, building new setup and picking up a retail AMD Phenom 9950. does it come with a CPU fan or would i need to pick one up separately.

if it says OEM anywhere on it then it won't come with fan. Retail version will. At least I think anyway

thats what i was thinking too, but havent built a computer in awhile.

retails generally do. the last chip i bought was a athlon 64 x2, and that was a while ago, but it came with the fan/heatsink combo.

AMDs naturally run hotter than Intel CPUs and their stock fan sucks. Just go aftermarket and spend like 40 bucks for a good Thermaltake fan/heatsink.

Just placed my order, should be getting it by end of this week. i think ill install Windows 7 RC1 on my new setup.

Retail versions come with a heatsink/fan because you have to run it to keep the warranty. OEM packages do not because OEM builders often have to use heasinks that fit their cases.

I usually have good luck with the OE fans lasting and keeping cool at stock clocks. But recently I had one go out on me within a week. Lucky new fans are cheap, heatsinks not so much.

go waterblock and liquid cooling

my next rig will prob be water cooled. as for a good fan? cant go wrong with Zalmans.

i was thinking of getting a good gaming case with lots of vents and fans, but researched water cooling and with the all the benefits of liquid cooling, why not.

sure it may cost $300-500 for a simple liquid cooling setup, but all the advantages over air cooling make it worthwhile. it is more efficient and quieter than all the fans going on, and if you have a sealed case, there will be less dust. the only downfall i see is if you get a leak, it might cause a short in your motherboard. but the reduced temperatures of liquid cooling far surpass anything fans and heatsinks can do.

but this might be a simple work computer, so you might not generate all that heat. so a fan and heatsink should do.

what about cooling for the hard drives? do they make liquid cooling for those that fit in the 3.5" bays, or just the 5.25" conversion ones?

yes, in fact besides cooling blocks for CPUs and GPUs, there also are blocks for hard drives and ram.

for example, look at this company's offering for liquid needs. they are pretty good.

dont really plan on over clocking so water cooled is a bit overkill for me.

anyways if youre worried about a leak shorting out your setup, you can always use mineral oil. if i were to go for a liquid cooled setup i think i would do it similar to this setup YouTube - Mineral Oil Submerged Computer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtufuXLvOok)

i would have to be insane to do that

You can get non conductive fluids for cooling.
Water Cooling Coolant & Dye at Xoxide.com (http://www.xoxide.com/water-cooling-coolant-dye.html)

There are 3.5" into 3.5" drive bay coolers.

stock fans suck. on almost any processor. don't use it even if it comes with one.

get a 30-50 dollar fan off newegg with a good rating, use good quality thermal paste, and you're done.

i bought that and its pretty quiet. costs 28 bucks.
has both hookups for AMD and intel. looks cool too

i know that the x2 5000 black edition did not come with any cpu cooler, im not sure if this goes for all black editions, but i do think that these processors are retail. (correct me if im wrong.)

since yours is not a black edtion and is retail then it should have a cpu cooler.

this is a good cpu cooler:
Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185125)

i had my amd x2 5000 black edition at 3.2Ghz and i was getting idles temps of 30c and load temps of 45c. now im back to stock clocks because of warmer weather just to be safe.

^^^^ AS5 is the best!

Seems with the mineral oil cooled computers, you didn't have to seal the electronic connections (power source, HDs, etc).

I'm sure moving parts like disc drives couldn't be submerged though.

FUCK does that look cool.

i used to assemble liquid and air cooling kits for comps when i worked for swiftech.
i was pretty amazed on how they were put together.

The CPU will come with a HSF unit.

Be aware that if you use an aftermarket HSF or any kind of cooling other than the HSF that comes with the CPU itself, you void your 3yr warranty.

Black editions also come with a HSF unit.

Also, although the Black editions come with unlocked multiplier, overclocking does void your warranty as well. So do all of it at your own risk, but if you fry your CPU don't come crying to AMD.

wow....that looks really nice.

I'm just using the HSF that came with my Intel processor. :/ I'm not using any CPU intensive apps (for now), so I'm not in a hurry to upgrade it.

That hasn't been true since 2000.

Anyway, I got a Scythe Ninja, X2 5000 BE OC'd. Doesn't break a sweat.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64.

I got the Intel version, the AC Freezer 7 Pro.

Cheap, quiet, effective. Do it.
