View Full Version : I keep popping them....an exhaust hose

ok, I have an exhaust hose (I think it's called a heater hose, anyway...) that keeps popping off a metal fitting that leads to the catalytic converter. When it pops off, my car starts to sound like a harley davidson... putt putt putt and it's really loud when WOT. I've tried two different rubber hoses (both which were 8$ ****ing dollars each at autozone) and numerous different clamps, and to no avail. Everytime I redline, the hose pops off, and after awhile the hose begins to rips which leads me to replace it once again.

I'll try and explain what hose it is or if you're too lazy, just look at the pics below...if you look at the stock airbox, there are two tubes that come out of it. One wraps around the engine bay into the intake manifold, this is the actual air intake. The other goes into a MAF sensor (I think) and is a rubber hose. From the MAF sensor is the rubber hose that leads to the catalytic converter and this is the hose that needs to be fixed.

edit: If anyone knows the part number or how to fix, please let me know. This rubber hose crap isn't working.

oh btw, I have an 1992 coupe

Maybe it gets really hot from all the surrounding pipes and the header, and then bursts off. Just a thought.

Maybe the tube overheats from the heat of all the other tubes and the header, and then it bursts. Also, maybe try to get straighter piping. Just a thought, someone correct me please if I'm wrong...

yea it does get hot and probably pops up because of it....but what kind of hose should I replace it with?

that's the AIV box, not the MAF sensor. try two things:

1. tighten the clamp more
2. take apart the AIV and clean it out to see if it's jammed up and causing strange pressure buildups.

actually, you don't even need the aiv, plug up the hole and take it out and throw it away. :)

not if you want to pass emissions in a state that does visual inspections.

sure! :D ****, i dunno man. i don't have any emissions stuff left on my car. my AIV is long gone. i'm just saying that this homie might not want to rip this out if he has to get tested soon.

in my state(man, i'm starting to hate this posting problem), they only check for egr and test it.

i haven't seen or heard of any smog guy that checks for the aiv.

i got checked for a missing aiv hose cause i had a breather on there. so yes, some places will check. i dont think it hurts anything to leave your aiv intact.
