View Full Version : Why do people like lowering their cars on a daily?

Okay so i was just reading http://zilvia.net/f/chat/218308-whats-most-damage-suffered-due-being-lowered-5.html
People scrape and break a crap load of stuff due to their cars being lowered.
ive never lowered my car before(but getting DMAX coilovers soon)
My friends tell me to lower the car....and its a daily but other then a little bit of looks and a little better handling, i dont get the point of being too low...
why would u want to risk denting ur oil pan or making a hole in ur exhaust?

I like driving a car that handles well on a daily basis. Its not stupid low but I don't have wheel gap either, but that doesn't mean its low beyond reason. You learn to drive with it and learn the limitations and you can drive anywhere. I used to dread driving into philly, but I figured it out.

there is nothing uglier than wheel gap (stock ride height) on an automobile
deolio

it's not so much about the car being low to the ground as it is about having good fitment.

low looks good, and in my opinion once you figure out how to drive with it it looks good, but going to low will mess with you suspensions geometry a decent bit.

I have my daily lowered 2.5 or so inches. At first I thought it was a bit of a pain scraping my exhaust everywhere. Then I put on some really aggressive aero. Couldn't drive anywhere. I swear, I had to reattach my aero every time I backed down a curb. There were places I could no longer visit because I couldn't drive there. Then my aero got completely ripped off and destroyed by a bump in the road, so I went back to stock, and now my lowered car doesn't seem so bad anymore.

it has to be lowered but useful, once you pass a certain point you run out of suspension travel and its just plain stupidity.
my motto is, your car needs to be setup hardcore. hardcore means, low but not too low where you cant LAUNCH the car in the fucking air and not worry about damaging your undercarriage.

some dudes here like it because its the latest trend.. some guys will super slam their cars just to fit in and find acceptance because they think its badass and have a rebel mind-state lmao
while others like it because of the handling characteristics of stiff coilovers and improved road feeling.
Guys with kits on their cars, you will realize their cars are not super slammed like some others, mostly the kit giving the appearance of super low. I set my car higher than what it once was, and am currently doing fine daily driving it super low.
With anything car modding, you will break stuff regardless. If this is something that worries you, than consider alternatives.
People with low cars + coilovers, seem to be more aware of their surroundings when they drive, you are more alert to whats ahead of you.

haha When I decided to slam my car I had to drive everywhere to find an alighment shop that had a pit and not a rack. my front bumper would come off or my sub frame would get stuck so then I just raised it a tiny bit but bigger wheels on it so I wasnt stuiped low and have no fender gap once so ever. all i need now is someone to roll my front and roll and pull my rears so I can put my spacers on =]

That's when she said "your car is 2 low, 2 loud and you drive 2 fast". oooo damm. Then she said, "it is embarrassing to ride in your car".

n e ways. nowaday, if your a tuner. its a must having slammed car, but only to the limit where it reaches its purpose. or else you'll fail miserably on a daily basis, but then agian its depends on the coils you get. my friend with a DA got some ebay coils, and he thinks its the coolest shit in the world tucking half his wheel in his wheel well and his car aint stiff at all but bouncy like a mofo...

i don't daily my car anymore. so its all low or no go. I love scraping everywhere. idk why. just makes me smile, and I know I'm doing it right imo. I love tucking tire in the fender because wheel fitment is also key. I love people looking and giving me thumbs up at stop lights. and it amuses me when I have to take sick angles at driveways and people behind me get all mad and are like wtf is this guy doing?? and I love rolling up to gas stations and theres some guy with his ballin bimmer with lambo doors thinking he's all cool with his system bumpin' when my car rolls in scraping and blaring drowning out his stereo and he just looks at me in pure confusion and awe and all the attention goes away from him and people are like dang! (happened a few weeks ago lol) its a way of life that we all adore. so you either step up the plate and risk damaging stuff. or you don't. its personal preference in the end.

This is actually a really good, under-rated suspension setup. 5k/4k I think, they're the stiffest of the "drop in" springs, and Koni Yellows are right in the middle of cheap coilover dampers and really nice 2/3/4 way adjustable stuff. Great starting track/autocross setup.
Problem is they're not height adjustable, so no one's gonna be talkin about em in this thread.

Lowered cars just look better, period. But once you get to a certain point, and have to start stretching tires and beating the hell out of your fenders and running crazy camber, you are ruining the function of those expensive coilovers, lightweight wheels, and nice tires.
Low is good, but TOO low is just as bad as not lowered at all.

I love how the new trend (new being the last 4 years, i'm old) is getting as low as possible with the biggest wheels as possible. LCA Angles and bump steer are drastically affected by lowering your car that much. Large wheels (18's and up) performance wise seem to be impractical. You cant fit any brake kid under a 18+ wheel that you can't fit under a 17" wheel, hell I run a nice set of 16's on my daily S13 (when I have one)
I just miss people moding there cars to drive them, not just for looks; but not only that, also understanding what the modifications do and weather they are improving anything.

The only time I ever had problems with my dropped sentra (moderately dropped mind you (1.5" in the front none in the back)) is that Penn State Brandywine/Delaware county had these ridiculously high speed bumps, no matter if I crawled over them my frame would hit. But other than that I never had problems with that and I rather have a more nimble lower to the ground car than my current body roll.

i am so glad i don't have an S13 any more.
I dont know what it is but this shit is so stupid, no shit its not "good for performance" and it will hurt your vagina when you go over speed bumps, but thats the whole point.
18x12s - hella unsprung weight,
Aero in general - probably worse for aerodynamics,
being low - inconvienient and performance is sacrificed.
but oh man, it looks so good.
i have a perfectly functional grip performance oriented EK civic at the moment, although i can take corners (considerably) faster than with my previous S13, and i can pretty much go over every driveway or speedbump (and i have the spoon lip), I have yet to enjoy the car more than i did the S13.

Here's a perfect way of laying it out. Hell, it helped a girl understand why we lower our cars so low.
Why do girls wear heels when they go out? They aren't comfortable at all. BUt they do it anyways. Why? Because heels make the legs of a girl look so much better. If a girl is hot, the heels just put her way over the top.
Same thing applies to cars and their low ride height.

Excuse me Austin but you show your ignorance with your age. You think just because people are slamming their cars now with coilovers that its something new and fresh. LOL you are such a youngster.
Dude people were dropping their 510's and 240z's back in the early 80's. They just did not have coilovers.
Instead they used shocks and lowering springs and if the springs did not lower it enough they cut them to drop it more.
It even got to the point where people would only cut the springs cold as to not affect the spring rate.
Was it ideal? No. Did it happen? Yes.
You fucking kids think you have invented something new with slamming your cars. Its not new, its been done before get over thinking you doing something new and fresh.

F1 cars aren't "lowered", the car is designed from scratch at that height. Also, when a height adjustment is made, there is a team of professionals with a huge budget to make sure it's performing it's best.

yea because the 240sx is a JGTC car.
its an imported sport compact car that looks and performs slightly better than the average car (at the time lol).
so lets make them look crazy cool and leave the actual performance to race cars and shit.
...seriously, come on.

the fuck is going on in here?
1. Being low with stock or ugly wheels doesnt count for beind rad.
2. i love it.

Look at this ricer:
http://www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~haha/lantische/field/h_jtcc_leftside.jpg
Clearly doesn't know what he's doing.
The function has less to do with ride height, and more to do with control arm angle. And since you can solve the roll center issue on S-chassis now, with aftermarket parts, or just have a hella stiff suspension to compensate, points of performance are more moot than ever.

What are you going to say to the guys that do have there car pointlessly low with retarded sized wheels and drive harder than you? There are the hard parkers and there are the people that will track there car with out touching there setup and it will scrape sideskirts and there nuts all the way around the track. Ala VRT just as an example "slide alliance" I think his name is with the 7s.

If it's just for looks, why do you guys put down civics with airbags so much? Fuck scraping rails, it's all about being immobile! Now you're going to talk practicality? LOL. Shitty double standards.
And putting off the 240sx as a budget coupe (although it is...) is such a fucking cop out. STS, SCCA, whatever... look at JRho's build, his car isn't dumped retardedly. Posers indeed.

i cant complain i still scrape but its due to my set-up

i don't daily my car anymore. so its all low or no go.

Now I understand why I never see slammed cars on the dyno.
1. Form over function = no hp.
2. They won't make it on the dyno without bottoming out and breaking something off.
3. The suspension settings are so bad the car hunts from side to side causing the dyno operator to toss the car from the shop.
Slammed cars are cool looking but don't let anybody tell you they did it for handling.
Now the guys who slame the car and swape engines are the real badasses who will pope your arm if you don't respect.

OK.........I have no problems with lowered cars as long as you aren't sitting on the bump stops and have some useful suspension travel.

I had 2 cars. But some jackass hit my DD while it was parked on the street and totaled it. I was happy to get rid of a few bills, but not happy to drive my "race car" all the time. A lowered car that breaks every 2 weeks. But my car is not stupid low as some people here put it. It's all about managing what you have. If you see a speed bump, or a steep incline, either avoid it, or go about it in a while that won't make your oil pan explode.

so, according to this thread:
a daily driven car needs to have race car suspension geometry so that it can be driven to the dyno.
