Y not use wood for motor mounts its solid yet flexible. Or phone book chunks (they can stop knifes)
I'm sure those are stupid questions

Why not just go all out?

Seriously though, wood can rot, swell, crack, and deteriorate among other things. It typically does not belong on cars.

ryguy
05-15-2009, 01:36 PM
Shit man, I would think wood would crack under the stress, plus the mix of heat, wood, and fluid probably isnt a great idea.

Well wood can take a good amount of compression but it would not be good for this type of purpose. Especially with the temperature changes, and hell if you get termites, say bye to your engine mounts lol

There are just so many things wrong with using wood for your engine mounts, do not do it.

this is epic. seriously, are nissan owners that fucking cheap? when we live in a world of knockoffs (which i dont condone) people try to beat buying knockoffs and try wood?

can you imagine being a inspection tech at an event and seeing fucking wooden mounts or phonebook stacks? i would fucking die laughing and then permaban then from the track.

Be sure to come back when the heat from the exhaust manifold sets your mounts on fire. You do realize that paper is flammable, right?

HI everyone,

Oilcover Racing is now accepting pre-orders for our
handmade wooden engine mounts. our mounts are
top quality, go thru a detailed inspection, and stained
with the finest finishes to ensure quality and performance.
they are also carefully hand-selected out in the forests
by our trained expert staff of gatherers.

painstakingly made in my garage with a band saw, no other
performance company can compare their mounts with ours.
in the Super Street engine mount shootout, our mounts passed
the 'floats in a bucket' 10 out of 10 times, which has never been done.

your levels of choice are:

balsa - lightweight, for motorcycles, karts, and lightweight vehicles
pine - our workhorse model. good for most racing applications.
maple - top performance, density, reliability. SCCA/IMSA/FIA legal.
mahogany - our VIP line of mounts.

prices starting at just 199/set. place orders now, and
expect orders to ship out the beginning of next month.

^^ Hockey pucks have been used for short term applications for decades when a custom mount location is needed. ^^

To the OP, I have heard of people using cut pieces of oak for mounts for test fitting engines in bays on numerous occasions for custom set-ups. But that's it, only used them for height and depth of where they would like the motor to sit (can cut and shim the mount, then fabricate the actual mount)....I never ever heard of any one running them for any kind of actual driving use.

i was gonna make mounts out of used condoms but then i realized i would need to use condoms to have them lying around. ive seen some crazy shit work on cars before but this is just rediculous.

all of this coming from a guy who has seen a car that had a motor held together with rtv run 10's for 3 passes before it blew up.

theres an idea too, you could fill a mold with rtv and let it dry out. rtv is silicon rite you would have silicone mounts, or better yet for the added stiffness you could wrap wood with phone book pages then silicon yourself into oblivion.
