my ebrake barely grips and is decent just to park.
but it does not grab at all so i cant even initiate at the track i go to.
i checked:
brake pads and their good
the lines hooked up
rotors are brand new
adjusted it tight, loose and everything else
but it still doesnt lock em up good enough :-/
any other possibilities why it does not grab?
thanks

Before we can help you, you must tell us what kind of brakes do you have?
1. Stock S13 / S14?
2. Z32 conversion brakes?
3. Q45 brakes? J30?
4. Aftermaket?
With Z32 rear ebrakes, they are naturally bad and will not lock because they are SHOES. ~

Are you fucking tripping?
R33/R34 GT(S)T and all GTR braking sets ups use inner shoes, just like the Z32 and they are the most popular brake upgrade available for Nissan's.
I'm sure theres about 10,000 people out there who are a testament to this set up locking the rears...
If you don't know what your talking about... don't post..

I do know what I am talking about. I've had all the calipers set up. I am running full swap with the BM57 MBC.
I've had Wilwood and Rotora set up as well, in addition the hydraulic ebrakes.
The Z32 Ebrake from my experience works on the cable and pulls the shoes to contact the inside of the rotors which isn't as good as clamping down on a rotor as exerted from the calipers. I've had better locks with stock s13/s14 calipers.
Disc brakes > Drums and shoes.
I am sayin gthe Caliper disc locking is better than the Z32's shoes method.
Maybe you have some special Vegemite on the shoes, but they aren't that great from my experience.

We're talking about Shoe Ebrakes, not the caliper brakes locking up here. Genius.

Are you fucking retarded? The whole point of having the drum ebrake is that there is more than twice as much surface area contacting the rotor than on a caliper ebrake. I can lock mine up from 70mph. If you can't get a drum ebrake to lock up you need to do 1 of 4 things. 1. Tighten the cable. 2. Get better shoes, you could try the Project Mu drift pads. 3. Get less sticky tires. 4. Shoot yourself in the face because you suck at life.
I rebuilt my stock calipers and it still did not lock up so I replaced my ebrake with a R33 4 lug setup so I didn't have to convert to 5 lug. It works perfectly with stock shoes.
To the OP, the reason you're having problems with the stock ebrake is because the piston corrodes and sticks. You can replace the whole caliper or convert to something else like a Z32 setup.

i replaced my rear brakes with new rotors and hawk hps pads the other day on my s13 with stock rear brakes and i have the same problem. i YANNKKKKKK on that e brake going like 50 mph and i dont even lock up. im running 205/50/16 nexens... and i know those tires arent grippy at all.

I don't use the Z32 rear ebrakes anymore because it was not effective to my own experiences. Maybe for you guys, it is sufficient, but I prefer a custom set up with the Hydraulic Ebrakes and Cylinder.
You get more force/pressure when using hydraulics vs. cable because of the booster. I use a hydraulic system with a calper ebrake setup and it definitely better than the shoes from the Z32/ Skyline brakes.
Maybe it's okay with your SR20DE, but my RB25 and 18x12's need more.
And relax with the cursing, you don't need to curse to make your point. THat's just weak arguement skills.

haha i was just about to say somethign about that. so i dont really want to go with z32, should i just find some calipers from the junk yard? or are they easily rebuildable? im trying to find the cheapest route for now.

My Skyline with drag radials still locked up perfectly. Of course a hydraulic ebrake is better but you were saying the stock ebrake was better and that is simply not true.

They are rebuildable but I'm not sure if you can get a new piston, without a new piston a rebuild will not help at all(already tried). You could get some junkyard calipers but they will probly be just as bad. You can get new calipers from rockauto.com, they aren't too expensive but you could probly convert for the same price.

ahh, well that just sucks haha. i know for sure that they DID lock up before i changed my pads.... would having to break my pads in have to do with them not being able to lock up? ...since i havent really driven the car much.

There are places where you can get rebuild ones for about $35-50 each that's if you turn in your calipers as cores.
The rebuild kits usually only comes with the seals from my experience.

If you had an S14 the best and cheapest would be Q45 brakes.
It is a direct bolt on, and if you have an SE (5 lug) all you need is:
1. Stock Q45 Calipers
2. Stock Q45 lines
3. Stock Q45 rotors.
I've gotten all these for $50 from the pick a part. They are really great as well. And NO mods really needed.

Yep, the rebuild kit I got only had seals. I would try to find some rebuilt calipers if your trying to keep it cheap.

You should just go 5 lugs.
5 is better than 4.
I found this out when my friend and I went to the junk yards.
I came out of the junkyard and his rear tire was flat. In addition he had 2 stripped wheel studs.
So, he had 5 lugs as well. So 5 bolts - 2 bolts = 3 bolts and he drove it home. If it were a 4 lug and this were to happen then he would only have 2 lugs to drive home on.
So 5 lugs was actually +1 better (literally) than 4 lugs.

haha i converted to 5 lug q45 up front with stock rear, and i have an s13. i got the calipers from pick a part also super cheap.

would breaking in my pads have to do with the ability for them to lock?

You should break in the pads, because some pads have resins and composites that must be burned off correctly. Too much heat and continuously braking will damage the pads and will not let them act correctly.

ahh. sounds good. ill wait a while to see if they get any better after time passes.
I've got 5 lug. What is my best options for rear brakes, with e-brake? Right now I have stock rear, and R32 fronts.

i think you could also try those URAS seahorse type things that are supposed to give you better leverage

(not my pic, but it's from a for sale ad here on the forum.. helps lock up your e-brake)

try bleeding/replacing your brake fluid.
Also, tighten up the cable at the handle. There is a 10mm nut just under the handle. the procedure is outlined in the FSM.
