View Full Version : Car won't start SR20DET
My car won't start today. It has been driving fine and didn't show any problems the last time I drove it 2 days ago, but now it won't start. It turns over, but won't crank. Battery is fine.
First I checked the plugs. They were really old, and the wrong heat range, so I went ahead and replaced them with bkr6e-ix ngk iridium plugs. Car still won't start.
Next I checked for spark. I am getting spark.
I can hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key.
I pulled the fuel pump fuse and turned the key to get the fuel out of the lines so I can check the injectors. While doing this, the car started for a second, but then ran out of fuel obviously.
So I'm assuming I'm getting too much fuel for some reason. My first guess is leaky injector(s).
I pulled the rail and primed the pump, no leaks. I had someone turn the key while I watched the injectors and they are "injecting" properly. So I have fuel and spark. Now I'm really confused..
Timing should be correct since the car was running fine a couple days ago.
What else should I check? Any ideas?

Clutch switch... Happened to me back in thunderhill
The switch needs to be engaged for the car
To turn over
Try this. Get on the floor press clutch
Down and manually press the switch with hand
Turn the car on all has to be simultaneously
You talking about the little black button under the clutch? I thought if that wasn't engaged then the engine wouldn't turn over at all because there would be no signal to the starter..

You sir are correct. Its kinda strange your getting fuel and spark and no vroom, the only thing that comes to mind is try cleaning your MAF sometimes mine will hessitate and be a bitch to start and after a good cleaning shes good to go but thats the joy of a blow thru MAF haha, if you had a leaky injector that was flooding your engine out you would smell it from inside the car if it was bad enough for the car to not start. Just a few ideas hope it helps

try starting the car with the maf unplugged, that'll help you determine whether the problem is a maf issue or a boost/vacuum leak
if you're stock then a 6 heat range plug is fine gapped at around .030
if you're running 10+psi then i'd go with a bkr7e or bcpr7es gapped at .028
sounds like you're getting too much fuel for sure, investigate further into why. a bad maf or boost leak will make car dump fuel too , that's why i suggested that to you.

I just unplugged the MAF and tried to start the car, but still no luck. I did notice, however, that one of the exhaust manifold studs somehow came out, so I should have a pretty decent exhaust leak.
I had a BAD leak at the manifold gasket last summer and replaced it with a copper gasket. The car didn't have any problem starting when I had the leak back then. So could this leak be causing the car not to start?

no, the culprit is not an exhaust leak
too much fuel to the point of no start
possible problems, bad maf, boost leak, bad coolant temp sensor.
check the plugs again, see what they look like after trying to start it. if they're wet with fuel clean them off , then try starting the car with the injectors unplugged, if it almost wants to start, then just plug in 2 of them and see if you can get it started and running long enough to plug the other 2 back in then diagnose your problem further

hmmm.. i wouldn't have thought about the coolant temp sensor, but now that you mention it, it had been acting funny for the past few weeks. My temp gauge would drop down to just above cold every now and then while cruising. I'll look more into that tomorrow. I just got back in to town, so I haven't had time to mess with it since Monday.

Thats a different Sensor
There are 2 temp sensors one for the gauge and the other for the ECU
Single wire Sensor = Gauge
Two wire sensor = ECU
Sounds like your gauge sensor is going bad also
also check ECU for codes
My car starts now. Here's what I did.
Nothing.
Haha, I let it sit for about a week because I was too busy to mess with it. Went to go try to start it today, just for the heck of it and it fired right up. I took it for a test drive and it drove great. I'm wondering if I maybe got some bad gas.
Anyway, I'm still not gonna drive it til I get that head to manifold stud replaced. I'm just happy it starts now. So odd..
