View Full Version : Measurements: S14 Sunroof vs. Non

I ordered a cage for a S14 with sunroof. It wasn't. I need to modify it (main hoop)

I don't have my hands on my car right now, and my other S14 was stolen so I can take measurements.

So, I need to know a few things:

1. What is the difference between the headroom in a S14 with a sunroof and one without? (ie: Sunroof car has 2.5 inches less clearance).

Exact measurement would be greatly appreciated especially if you have made, or modified a cage for a sunroof S14.

2. It's easier to make a straight cut, section out whatever the difference is and re-weld a short distance above the floor plate. Is this weaker than cutting the measerment out at the proper angle and rewelding the main hoop to the floor plate? Would the first option cause a problem at tech inspection?

Possibly.

If someone could tell me why my plan won't work?? Otherwise I'm going to try it.

Theres a solution for everything. Keep that sun roof.

Im guessing the reason that they are telling you not to do it is because they have done it before. and they know its not going to work. First off your cutting a bolt in cage thats not ment to be cut. It was made car specific. Second, the second you touch it with a saw your loosing the integrity of the metal, and its going to be weaker than its supposed to be.. If you were to flip, and that weld that you did breaks. your not going to be happy.. I think you should Sell it to whoever wants it and and buy a nother one. Dont cut it at all... bad idea.

^^^You really think its going to make that much of a difference? Theres a higher chance of flipping a stock non caged S14 daily driving than vs a tracked S14 with a cage.

Cut the beams, weld in some flat low gauge material and dimpledie the holes.

Only way I would see it w/o selling the cage. Either way you need one hell of a welder

Cutting and rewelding to the floor plate will not affect the integrity at all, I know that for a fact. Im only looking to shorten the main hoop.

OK somone with a sunroof measure from headliner to floor, and somone else without a sunroof do the same please.

why dont you call the ppl you ordered it from and tell them they fucked up and sent you the wrong cage?

Since everyone is being a bitch and not giving you measurements.

I have a 97 SE without a sunroof.

Measurement from the center hump (trans tunnel) to just behind the dome light (basically the center of the roof): ~33.5"

Measurement from the rear passenger side floor mat to the center of the roof: ~42.5"

I just went outside and did this, it look like 15 seconds, someone else with a sunroof should be so kind as to do the same.

as soon as I find my tape measure I'll get the sunroof dimensions, I've wanted to know this same thing since I bought this car, finally I'll know

Now why didn't I think of that?

Thank you 95KA-Turbo, and genericforumname. lol great screen name.

alright, from the floor to the sunroof is more or less 40.5, from the trans tunnel is about 31 or so, granted the floor measurement may be different as I don't have floor mats so I don't know it that makes a big difference to you or not. *it looks as though you'll have to hack off about 2 inches, seems a bit extreme but I don't know if that would affect the angle of your cage or anything*

on a side note it seems as though I have a love/hate problem with my sunroof, sometimes I think how easy it would be to get rid of it, sometimes I like rolling all the windows down, cranking the sunroof and driving(especially at night for some reason)

also do you have any problems with rust on your sunroof? mines rusting all along the area that's metal around the glass, on the sunroof though, not part of the roof. My assumption is that whoever thought that drain hole was a good idea was a complete moron.

edit number 2*you might want to make sure the dome lights are mounted in the asme area, from my trans tunnel I don't have a straight vertical line from the tunnel to behind the light, only in front*

My old car had a sunroof, so I know the lights are in slightly different spots.

I will also say I measured from the floor with OEM floor mats in place.

I can say from having worn a helmet in both a sunroof and non-sunroof chassis that there is AT LEAST 2-3 inches of difference in the driver's head room. As for the main hoop area, that's a little different.

Hopefully our measurements have helped. If I can I'll get one of my friends with a sunroof to come over and I'll measure his car in the exact same places I measured mine from....to reduce risk of error.

yeah that's a good idea, I can tell you I haven't even tried to find a helmet yet because I know it wont clear, I'm only 5'9" and I can almost smack my head into the roof over harsh speedbumps when I sit upright in the proper position. also a big part of my reason for potentially deleting it in the future.

Yeah I'm 5'10" and I would always just open the sunroof and keep my head crooked the whole time I had a helmet on, haha. That was in a stock seat anyway, I'm sure a low mounted bucket would take care of the problem.

Thanks guys! I knew there were still some helpful folk on here. Viperbite I will PM you.

As far as the dome light, I know the non sunroof ones are further forward. The main hoop goes up at about a 15 deg angle. Im almost sure it will either hit or be close. I dont want the cage too far from the roof so I may just take it out and red0 my headliner.

Im 5"10.5' lol and I don't really have much of an issue hitting my helmet on the roof. But then again I sit more reclined than the average driver and a little further from the wheel (I have really long arms) so that may be a factor. For some reason I don't feel comfortable tracking with the roof open.
