View Full Version : Engine stalls in neutral

I've recently started to notice that when I am driving at high speeds (50+) and put the car into neutral like if I'm coasting down a hill, the engine will stall out. I've never noticed this as much in the past as I have in the last few month. There were even times where I didn't know what happened until I realized that I couldn't turn the steering wheel. Either I just restart the car as I'm rolling along or I'll just put the car back into gear and give it some gas. It just scared me a couple times because the steering wheel locked as I was coming up on a curve in the highway. This doesn't happen a low, city speeds when I do the same thing, coasting down hills.
Is this normal? If it is, then I'll stop letting the car coast as much on the highways.
I've also noticed a much rougher idle recently--I can feel the car shaking rythymically more so than I could in the past. Could that be related? any ideas? Fuel related issues?

vacuum leak. take some carb cleaner and start spraying aound your intake till you find it.

No, this is normal.

Mine does the same. Vacuum is perfect at -22psi. Then coasting on freeway, put it to neutral. I stall after flames come out of my exhaust.
It's normal...

try tps sensor.....had that problem before.i believe it was either TPS sensor.......
also with the car on check the wiring on your MAF sensor too....jiggle it a lil not too much you might mess it up but gently and if the idle fluctuates it could be the sensor...but im pretty sure tps!

Thanks for the replys (that was pretty quick too). Okay, I'll give the vacuum lines, MAF, and TPS a look.
Well, if that doesn't do the trick, I'll just chalk it up to being normal and not worry about it any more, or at least hope that I don't have to worry about it in the future.

Buddy of mine has this problem as well.
I've never experienced it! Lucky me!

I was assuming it was your idle speed, but you probably have that set correct right around 700rpm. If you're like me, you expect the motor to bog when you turn the power steering wheel, because I removed the wiring for the idle bump up PS circuit!
If your idle is fine then I agree with the others on IACV being bad.

racepar1 did a writeup on this or some shit similar.
i don't own a ka24de but it was a very informative writeup. i believe it did have to do with the idle air control valve wiring. open up the wiring loom that leads to your iacv. or just search for racepar1's writeup.
Open up the idle screw a bit and it'll lessen this.

Don't put it in neutral. Stock ecu runs differently cause it thinks it's going to be sitting at idle. Leave it in gear.

Does this happen only right after your bov releases pressure, put it on neutral and let off the gas pedal? If it is; are you runing a recirculated Bov? If you are running atmosferic then you should get it tuned for that setup, there is a setting on apexi afc that takes care of that and would be a cheap fix. But thats assuming your car is turbocharged

There isn't a turbo on this car. It's mostly a stock KA.
-I checked out the MAF and it seems okay.
-The idle seems to be fine too. The rpms seems fairly steady when the car is idling.
-I still haven't checked the TPS though. I'll take a look at it when I get back from work tomorrow.
Thanks for the replies so far. It feels good to have some possible solutions to take a look at rather than simply leaving it alone.

adjust the tps to around .45 volts. it has to be plugged in when you adjust. ohms can be right and you can still be out of adjustment.

You know what annoys me and most likely others as well? When people say for example. TPS sensor, your basically saying throttle position sensor sensor.

They deserve death. Same with the swine who say "your" instead of "you're".

locking up?? that shouldn't happen unless you take out the key. i would say that is not normal
