Looking to buy a new desktop PC for the living room. The budget is around $700, and I'm sure there are several ones out there that are decent for that price. I'm looking for something simple my mom can use to go on the internet, and use Microsoft Office, and occasional photo editing, so it doesn't need to have too much memory and RAM.

I'm pretty knowledeable when it comes to Macs, but I'm not up-to-date with PCs anymore.

Can I has help?

blah for that I would go with a dell. You can get a decent dell with 22" lcd for under $500.

Hardcore gaming, video editing, music production build a custom quad.

PC stands for personal computer. Technically, a Mac is a PC too. But you know....better.

$700 is definitely an overkill for the uses you stated. id suggest building a custom computer (could possibly be done for ~$400 depending on what parts you need) or as stated above get a dell or similar company that gives you a whole combo (computer, monitor, speakers, etc.)

good luck.

I guess I'll go with a *cough* Dell, unless others have recommendations.

Then why don't you get a Mini?

My mom will be using this regularly, and she's not exactly computer literate. She tried using my Mac and it was too
complicated for her. I just need something basic with everything included.

You're the one being hypocritical.

Exactly. I'm not dick riding mac. I'm just saying OSX is made to be 100% simple. Vista copied OSX on trying to make window's easier for computer illiterate people.

She's use to a Windows OS, thus not wanting a Mac. Simple as that. -______-

Now I see why the PC owners get worked up over the Mac guys.

PC owners never want to be told anything

thats all

and i bought a mac for my mom and she fucking loves it

because she can go right into the mac store and they will show her how to do anything

she's gone in multiple times because she was so excited someone was willing to show her stuff

and mac owners just can't seem to get it that windows environments are what most of the world uses...making more things available for it (simple), you don't see MS making some version of parallels so you can run OSX on it too right?

...but in the end this is just a pointless stupid arguement and unless you are like 13 years old and just now really starting to understand OS's why even bother going back and forth on which is better...they are all different (windows, OSX, linux...). All of them are far better than the others in some ways and suck ass compared to the others in the next category.

/rant

and back on track with the original topic.

Obviously you'll get the most bang for buck with a DIY build, can't argue that.

All the major PC company's have basic computer's available in that price range aswell...you just wont' get as fast of a machine in exchange for it having a logo on it and coming pre-assembled.

Your only Mac options would obviously be used or Mac-mini....OSX shouldn't be a problem for "mom" as the most basic functions she'd use it for will all basically be the same once the program is actually open so all you'd have to teach is how to find/open that program.

Basically if you already run a mac, staying Mac might be nice (uniform software solutions instead of something different on your personal computer as opposed to the one in the next room). But on the flip side you will be able to get a lot more "bang-for-buck" building a PC. Just figure out what you want and go from there...not really much people here can help you with at this point, all we can do is suggest random model's to get or parts to order to build one.

Decide which way you want to go first.

Why not just run both.

No arguing, no crying about which is better.

It's not like you HAVE to choose one.

^if you are talking about what the original poster should do then his options would be limited to a mac-mini and boot-camp/parallels. Or building a computer with similar hardware to a Mac and trying to get it to install on (not always easy....i've done it)

ALTRNTV

I guess I'll just build a simple one then. My mom specifically said no to the Mac, so PC it is. I won't be using it much, as I don't
live at home.

Get a cheap linux box. People can't fuck with it and mess it up unless they know how to get into terminal, or have learned your PW.

I'm just saying that to make mac/M$ owners get hard-ons.

^yea...seems like all you can really do is try and stir things up with that comment since now it seems this machine is mostly for his mom to use and she has already put her foot down against mac so I doubt she wants to use any linux distro.

My home computer is an iMac, I have an iPhone, I develop for the iPhone (so I work for Apple, in a disconnected sense) and even I think the Mac fellatio is out of control in this thread and others.

The man asked for PC recommendations. For his mom. His mom is used to Windows, does not like Mac, and therefore needs a PC.

If you're used to one OS, and have to switch, it's cumbersome. No matter how intuitive or user-friendly the new OS is. I've used and built PCs all my life and I work in IT and software, and when I first got my Mac, I didn't know where the hell anything was. It took a while to get used to it. I can imagine his mom would be the same way.

Thus, the request for PC recommendations is valid and the shameless Apple orgy is unnecessary.

even though you say simple. i'd still recommend at least a quadcore processor these days...even a basic Q6600 2.4GHZ which is what I have is more than enough to keep me happy.

like they say, DIY is better at times if you know what you're doing...i built my home pc myself late last year, specs:

1 x ($69.99) HD 500G|ST 7K 32M SATA2 ST3500320AS - OEM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148288&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16822148288)
1 x ($119.99) PSU CORSAIR|CMPSU-750TX 750W RT - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16817139006)
1 x ($189.99) VGA EVGA 512-P3-N873-AR 9800GTX+ RT - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130376&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16814130376)
1 x ($21.99) DVD BURN SONY-NEC|AD-7200S-0B 20X % - OEM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118012&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16827118012)
1 x ($199.99) MB ASUS INTER P5E X38 775 RETAIL - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131219&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16813131219)
1 x ($189.99) CPU INTEL|C2Q Q6600 2.40G 775 8M R - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16819115017)
1 x ($119.00) MEM 2Gx2|CORS TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF R - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145197&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-N82E16820145197)

that's basically it...i spent ~900 on this set up last year, you can probably get it for way less now, and pretty sure you don't need that expensive of a tower, PSU, vid card, ram etc... anyway...so yeah. totally DIY is cheaper and much more fun.

HEY GUYS YOU SHOULD RUN WINDOWS ON A MAC. I MEAN, LIKE, DON'T MACS RUN VISTA BETTER ANYWAY? AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT THE FUCKING COMMERCIAL SAID HUHUHUH

http://www.troubleinrivercity.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/super-retard.jpg

srsly tho :P

Look into nettops or net tops..whatever they call them. MSI and--I think--Asus make some nice ones, and you get a small footprint. $700 for a full setup w/ monitor and peripherals or just the pc? That kind of money can go a long way.

If you have the know-how to build one, you definitely should do that if you must have something new. Otherwise try craigslist or something for a used comp. Even Pentium 4s can do what your mom is asking.

Side note: I was going to poke fun at the Mac guys if nobody brought it up, but they couldn't even stay the fuck out of this thread LOL! Talk about insecurity. I'm tempted to start a "Recommend me a laptop (NO MACS)" out of spite.

Nettop is different from netbook. Netbook = mini laptop. Nettop = mini desktop. Look em up. Like has been already said, NEC, MSI, Asus... they make really small formfactor desktops capable of HD playback, probably the size of those western digital mybooks.
