I hve that same turbonetics turbo..
I think the problem with the turbo is the backing plate.

the blue backing plate probably got worn out where the bearing(?) goes.

Yours looks like it has the same problem as my turbo. wheel rubbing on the compressor housing with massive shaftplay. once you take it apart, you'll see that the actual bearings are in good shape, though.
