View Full Version : Misfire, Backfire, Popcorn?!

So, I have been trying to figure out this problem for about a week now...
My KA-T keeps misfiring and backfiring.

Here's what happened.

I was driving on the freeway,
my spark plug wire falls off the distributor.
All of a sudden anytime I accelerate more than just cruising speed,
my car backfires constantly like popcorn and loud.

As loud as... say, FormulaD or D1 cars,
except almost as if im bouncing off the limiter but I'm not.

I drive another 2 miles to the exit and as I stop I realize my car sounds like an STI.
I figure..."great, 3 cylinders. What did I do now?"
I park in a parking lot to find the spark plug wire off the distributor.
So I plug it back up and start my car.

To my surprise it starts to misfire on idle.
lil pops here and there every couple of seconds or so.
I rev it and it misfires more.
I think its a spark plug wire I pulled that broke apart.
So I fix it, replace it with another one.
Problem is still there.

Replace spark plugs with new ones.
Idle and revving got smoother but still misfired.

Replaced cap and rotor with brand new OEM parts.
Idle and revving got even smoother but still slight misfire on hard revving.
Took it for a test drive.

On hard acceleration [anything more than somewhere between 1/4-1/2 throttle] the car backfires LOUD and constantly.

I dont know what else to check because I have already checked
spark plugs
injectors
spark plug wires
distributor cap and rotor

SOMEONE PLEASE POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

have you checked gapping on the plugs?
maybe your blowing the hell out of your spark!!
good luck with it!!

cheers

+1 on the spark plug gaps. I would try .028 for the gap. Try using higher grade gasoline. Maybe that will make the car run smoother.

maybe bad injector or bad or dirty air control valve

Setup is

GT28R
370cc injectors
N60 maf
z32 fuel filter
s15 fuel pump
chipped ECU

the gapping is what it always has been since i went KA-T.

I use 91 octane.
ECU is tuned for this fuel and if I wanted anything higher than 91 the drive is not fun.

Im thinking i blew out my internal coil for my distributor.
Ill see.

Im also gonna check out my maf and ecu and swap them with a friends.

I'd toss a timing gun at it while you're in there... I know when we first got my car to start it was about 20* advanced over stock, and would give a big backfire every 5 seconds at idle. No sense in not checking, just in case, yeah?

Do a Leak Down Test. Perhaps you have a burnt exhaust valve.
