im gonna save you from the flaming.
If the engine is newer than the chassis or the same year, and you keep all the proper smog emissions components then yes you can have it legally.
If you would search a bit this is what you would have stumbled upon

RB didn't come in any cars in the US so that will never pass BAR.

Any never engine that came in the same make of a car will pass. Of course as long as you can pass smog and have the receipts. :]

You have to check with laws of the other state.

ok i know that its hard to get it legal so i would look into illegal smog or do what my friends are about to do and that is register ur car in Arizona and have a po box out there and just get the plates and its should work.

as long as your still in Cali and a resident here your supposed to turn your out of state plates. you can still get a ticket.

Yeah and half the time when you take a 240 to the smog stations out here they put the front wheels on the rollers

^Seriously. I had to argue with the guy when he pulled the front wheels onto the dyno and I told him it was RWD. After about a minute of bickering, he finally looked under the car, saw the diff, and said, "Oh, I guess you're right." Fucking retard. lol
