hey got a 96 zenki wondering does anyone know how closely smog techs look at our cat when doing smog ... i mean can we get away with replacing at least the front cat with a aftermarket non obd2 compliant cat ... i would think they can see what they need on the back on but just wondering ... this is getting stupid with +$500 for cats oem replacements

you can get an aftermarket cat welded in as far as I know.

Its not about the tech its the reading. OBD cats reduce NOx, older cats don't.

but im saying in california where i live they jack up the car and look at the cat to see if its cali legal and/or stock ...

It is going to depend on your tech. Some guys are real anal, and some guys are real easy. Just make sure you go to no pass no pay tech.
