Hey guys, i'm thinking about getting a titanium shift knob, and i was wondering, what kind of setup do you need either with a torch or through electricity to get the burnt titanium look (basically ti's oxidation)

I'd like to polish the ti, then shock it to get some nice colorful oxidation :):)

There was video I saw on the on the internet saying that you can colorize titanium with some batteries and soda.

Edit: After a bit of google, I remembered that it was Popular Science magazine

i have a HKS titanium exhaust but it ddint come with the burnt blue tip. so i took a torch and heated the tip all the way around until it was glowing red. thats it. when it cooled down it turned blue where it was glowing red. thats all there is to it.

can you do it to stainless steel too? aka regular exhaust tips.

^Yes, but if you don't do it PERFECTLY, then it turns out looking all grayish blue, bronze, and retarded.

I know knives that are titanium change color from the heat of your hand. I figure shift knobs might do the same thing also.

Yeah, tried the "burnt tip" look on my SS exhaust. Not so much. You have to heat it to a certain temp to get it blue.

Titanium turns blue when it gets hot hot hot.

find someone that does gold packages on emblems and they can get a material called cobalt which will do the affect you are talking about

I have no idea, I haven't prefected it on thick metals yet.

It's usually done by laser which is more precise and controllable.

But, you can use a small torch and IIRC an electrolytic solution (anodizing)...

I would get one pre-made, not worth messing up a $100 shift knob.

Edit: Ooo this might help you:

If you fuck up looks like you can re do it, so I retake back the statement above.

awesome, the burnt look is basically ti's version of rusting, so once you polish it, it usually comes right off because the discoloration is sitting right on the surface and is only a mil or two thick.

thanks again guys

A spec sells theirs for like $100 why wouldn't you just get that?

I got one and its heavy as shit and super easy to shift gears
