Use to be you lost your job, you lived on your savings and reduced your budget.

Now when you lose your job, you don't have any savings, you're thousands in debt and they give you benefits for not being employed.

On the other hand, the US government is handing out billions in bailout packages, which is about as socialist as you can get. I strongly oppose this, and I believe they should let the bankrupts fail. It is completely unfair to the people who have been doing things right making sacrifices in order to prevent bankruptcy from happening to them. What kind of example is the government setting? It is alright to be an idiot and screw around and completely fail, because in the end it won't matter and you will get bailed out?

As I said, I am a firm believer in a healthy balance of everything.

The Chinese have a higher savings rate per capita (population and % of income) than Americans. That alone speaks volumes if you know how much they earn and what they spend their money on.

Americans have forgotten how to save. Even worse, most people don't even realize that all accepted economic principles agree that savings = growth.

We live in a want now, get now society that is willing to put themselves into grave amounts of debt b/c in the back of their minds, they think they'll always be alright. Whether they believe the government will save them or their banking institutions or adding another credit card to "consolidate debt" will fix the issue is unknown to me. I just hope it becomes obvious to the people that such institutions are equally as vulnerable and that reckless spending with no regard for the future is a fundamentally flawed mindset.
