I was wondering if anybody had a list of engine/tranny sensors that wont put your ECM into an open loop if removed.
Sensors I was wondering about were EGR solenoid, Neuteral position sensor, 5th gear position sensor, and VSS
Checked throughout the FSM and it seemed the Neuteral position switch and VSS Does in fact control engine operation, just concerned about an open loop condition.

Wrongo.
The only things needed on the engine for proper running are:
MAF
IACV
IAA
TPS
CTS
injectors (duh)
CMPS/coil/power transistor
O2
Everything on the transmission and/or lower harness is optional. Without the VSS you won't have a speed input to the ECU, nothing will happen. Same for neutral and 5th gear switches. The EGR, AIV, EVAP system, and anything emissions related (depending on year) can be tossed or bypassed without ill effect. CPS on an S14 can be tossed. You can remove the FICD solenoid from the IACv if you don't have A/C, or don't care about idle up when it's engaged. The knock sensor won't go into open loop, but it will lean out just a hair. A resistor fixes that.

Cool man, appreciate it.

I still fail emissions for no neutral sensor so I hope you don't live in MA

CEL will trip with all those missing, sure, which will cause a failure for emissions and inspection. But they're not needed for anything else. Anything removed from the engine/drivetrain will trip the CEL. Stupid, but that's how it works.

But even if it doesn't affect the motor directly won't tripping the MIL have a possibility of running the motor with a different strategy such as limp home mode or retard timing?

No the car will run the same without those. The VSS though I would keep also as the ECU uses the VSS signal for deceleration by adjusting the IACV so you don't stall. Most cars this really won't effect how their car runs but with big cams this helps it from stalling on decel.

Cool. How do you know this. The fsm just says the speed sensor is one of the inputs for iacv. My car stalls upon decelleration intermittently.

The FSM on EC section says something about Neut posit and VSS being an unlikely problem for low power, throttle response and bogging (the chart with the ballot looking dots) 95 s14-
However it made me think since there WERE white bubbles in those boxes I assumed at somepoint they could affect some sort of IACV control.

Nope. There is no 'limp mode' on the S14 other than the limited redline when the MAF is dead, you can run into open loop, which is usually from a bad O2. Believe me, I drove my old car for nearly nine years with only the sensors I mentioned connected and have done so with numerous customer's cars without any ill effects.

I have solid lifters and Tomei 270 degree cams and also a Z32 tranny so the speed sensor reads incorrectly. When doing some research Chris Epstein from RS-Enthalpy explained how the VSS works in conjunction with the IACV/ECU.
