There is a lock, or snap ring that rides on top of the off-white plastic spacer the is on the bottom end of the shifter assembly. You can use a snap ring pliers to squeeze it together or shuffle one of the ends close to one of the gaps and then use a standard screwdriver to pry it off. Once the snap ring is off, the shifter will pull right out.

i dont think we are talkin about the same thing. The only thing i can see that can be squeezed to gether to get off is black and it is at the bottom of the shifter assembly. But what im talkin about is the actual black stick, from the bottom of the assembly, the ball is attached to the silver stick and then the black stick thing is on top.

If you look at the top right of the pic, that shift boot is the new one, and i need to get that in between the black and silver part of the stick.

So im lost, dont know what to do.

We are, I just didn't explain enough I guess. The stick is a one-piece assembly that goes all the way into the transmission. It's one piece.. When you take off the snap ring you can see that. The design of the stick can be deceiving the first time around. When you have a stock shift-stick, which it looks like you do, it is a one-piece assembly. You have to take out the snap ring and then you can, with some time and a little elbow grease but gently, get the rubber boot around the base of the stick and seal up your transmission. Then all you need is a zip-tie to tie it off and your done. Don't forget to put the snap ring back on before you tie it off or you'll have some big problems when you start down the road later. Let me know....

Sorry not a helpful thing for you silvia240 but that ring thing you are talking about N1ceDrgn is that the ring you take off to fill the tranny fluid through the shifter when changing tranny fluid?

Also dont you have to buy a new ring (thats what I thought I read about when changing the tranny fluid) or can you use the same one?? Probably buy a new one just in case it breaks when its being taken out right? Thanks just noticed the nice picture and thought Id ask

That same ring is the one you pull to change out/ remove the shifter and that is what Silvia needs to in order to install the base rubber boot in the picture.

thanks nicedrgn, i did it, but it turns out if i just grease up the tip of the new shift boot it slides right in. And to change the shift boot, you do not need to remove to clip to make it go in. Even if you do take out the shifter, you cant get the new shift boot through the bottem because it will not go over the plastic peice (it is off white in color and just hangs around the shifter when taken out).
Either way, thanks for the help.
