My friend has one on his hatch. I can try and get a part # off of it for you since I know Yakima doesn't list a 240sx application.

Edit* and it attaches like this, so it should work for coupe or hatch...

I always liked the way a roof rack looks for some reason, but they won't work if you have wind visors, just a note. You could just buy a universal one and drill it in though.

yea but im not going to keep it on all the time so it would suck to drill it on and drill it off you know...that one on the hatch looks cool and its going to serve it purpose.

i am not sure how much stuff you are hauling when you go snowboarding, but i fit my board (162) in my coupe. just flop down the back seat and slide it through. i had a passenger and the trunk/backseat area was FULL with other stuff.

roof racks are sweet but save yourself some money if it is not necessary. i want one too, but it will be for my bike. sadly, those don't fit too well inside.

well i have a custom sub enclosure so when my back seat comes down that whole is covered and has two subs in plain view. so i really don't have another way, plus like you said i could also use it for bikes.

To put a Yakima rack system on your coupe you would need:

Q Towers - $159.00
Q38 clips - $35.00 x2
48" Crossbars - $70.00

and then the boardmount if only 2 boards
Powderhound -$ 119.00

and I would also suggest the lock cores to stop people from stealing your gear

6 pack of lock cores - $ 75.00
(1 for each Q tower and 1 for each board rack)

Total price $493.00

I deal with racks everyday at work and this by far would be the best setup over any drilling or custom jimmy rigging setup.
This is the same setup the pictured hatch has also.

A snowboard will fit in a 240. I have had them in both my S13 and S14. Put the binding flat, rear seats down, board in sideways. I Have a TEIN bottom mount rear strut bar as well.

roof racks are f'en expensive I'm not sure if a light duty hitch would fit on a 240 but that would be the way to go then just get a hitch rack

There's several guys who have done custom hitches on their cars. One guy in NC years ago, Frankie Overbey, had one in place of the rear bumper support flushed mounted behind his plate. The plate was set on a flip up swivel so he could raise it and slide the ball into the receiver, but with it down it was completely hidden. it was slick, he towed a trailer with his spare autocross wheels and shit. Better than piling them in the car.

relax people, i am here, i will save you.

the past 2 months i have been researching roof racks and i have had one installed for the past month or more.

its very universal except the Q Clips. which are Q38.

what you need to do is go on craigslist. find a roof rack setup with 48 inch crossbars and 4 q towers. you buy the Q clips on ebay for 35 shipped for all 4.

then you buy what you need or want as options. like a fairing, snowboard mount, bike mount, whatever it is your going to use it for.

if that doesnt help you. go to yakima.com. go to fit your car. put your car in. and it will ring you up at 583$ and you can pay them alot. then take your package to a bike shop and pay them a shit load, and they will install it. or you can just do what i did and spend a total of $150 and install it yourself.

agreed that snowboards will easily fit in a coupe. but if you want to take bikes with you, why dont you get a tow hitch installed that can be used as to hold bikes with the adaptor?? it'll also serve to conceal some of your license plate if you're into running red lights often

well i have a custom trunk...so everything is sealed. the tow hitch looks wierd.....plus the roof rack also looks "COOL" and its works .....so does anyone have actual "item" or "product" numbers?

the information for yakima racks have been listed 3 times in this thread.

most cars werent Designed for a roof rack. obviously.

the weight goes to 4 corners of the roof rack its not putting all the load in one spot. ive driven 80-90 on the freeway with my bike mounted on the roof and i have had no problems. i installed a fairing a week ago and its quieter now.

the roof racks are functional and they look good.

You're right Mike. It's pulling the trim off my buddy's car.

If I ran a rack I wouldn't leave it on all the time. Short trips, low speed, carrying shit, I think would be OK. But full time like he leaves it on there, it is leaving permanent dimples where it clips onto the flimsy/thin trim.

i custom bent my mounts. Thule and yakima say they dont make fit kits and thats cause they dont trust the metal piece on the side. I bent some brackets to custom fit. Put about 200 pounds in the box and 2 snowboards on my rack. I then drove 3,500km across the country with no problems. have had it on since.

its a class 1 hitch. you cant really have any tonge wieght on it of course i want to say 200lbs. but it can tow a fair amount. my friend which is the only other person that i know that has a hitch like me towed his gsx600 plus alot of other bullshit across from cali to florida twice now and has had no problems what so ever. but let it be known i modifyed my hitch, normaly if you get this hitch its a flat bar style meaning it just has the plate with a hole in it to just drop a ball it in. well i cut that off and bought the square hitch tube from a trailer shop welded it on. i did this so i can use a bike rack that goes into a hitch.

the hitch is made by curt and can be found on alot of places. i think jegs even has them.

Anyone get a noticeable loss of MPG with the addition of a roof rack or hitch? I currently own an IS300 (saving up for S13), and as soon as I threw the roof rack on- my MPG went down about 5-7mpg with two DH bikes. Each of my bikes weigh 40-50lbs each.

My plan was to run a hitch on the S13- but it looks like very few have done it, so info is limited. Most class 1 hitches have a tongue weight of 200lbs with a 1 1/4'' receiver for cars. Figuring two DH bikes will weigh around 70-115 lbs both plus the weight of the bike rack- it would already be near the maximum limit for the tongue weight. Put that together with a car that has stiff suspension, the bikes would be bouncing around stressing the hitch quite a bit. But from seeing the photos of a 240 towing a street bike on a trailer, I guess DH mountain bikes wouldn't be too bad.

BTW NSR250, That's a sick bike!

1. why save up for an S13 when you already have something better? like an IS300.. people with s13's save up for IS not other way around

2. you should not be driving with your bikes mounted all the time anyways, i know its safe but its just plain dumb to put a bike on your car but never ride it. If you want it with you at all times then just remove the front wheel and place the whole bike in the car.

3. I have seen a hitch on an IS300 before... again why bother getting an s13 to do this?

haha if only the IS300 wasn't automatic. I'm still keeping the IS but my sister will be driving it.

I don't drive with my bikes mounted all the time- it was just a curiosity.

Main reason for an S13 is that I want something more agressive- and something I don't have to worry about having to dip in the bank for to fix. The Lex is going to cost more to repair in almost every aspect. Hell the belts, water pump, seals and so on need to be replaced soon! and that's not cheap. The reason I wanted a Hitch on the S13 is because a 50lbs bike on the roof swaying around isn't fun from my experience with it on the IS300. But it's not super high priority. Just wanted to see how many other have done this.

i have two steelhead mounts and a snowboard rack for my integra and when i installed the bike rack, fairing and said components above, my MPG dropped 5mpg instantly. the bikes dont make it better, but they dont make it much worse than a 5mpg loss.

I don't have the automotive "know how" to fix it alone. I have found a shop that will do it for less though. :ughd:

Is it 7-800 for just the roof rack without bike trays? because a yakima system with just the rack and no bike trays is 299. But with 7-800 dollars you can get a yakima system including the SKS locks and bike trays. I'm sure you could find better deals elsewhere though. Luckily I already have one from my IS300 so all I need are new clips.

The only thing I don't like about the yakima rack is how close together the bars are. Do they have a short roof adapter like thule? When I have bikes on my rack they are a little wobbly but I'd imagine it would be alot worse with the bars a foot closer. And hitch racks are a pain in the ass. You have to have like a dozen straps all over the place or the wheels and pedals bang around into your bumper and trunk Plus the bikes get scratched up.

Thanks in advance.

The 94 Integra 4dr requires Q11 clips, while some people have said Q38. For an S14 (1995 coupe), is it Q11 or Q38? Seeing as there is no actual fit, does it actually matter?

and it came it factory boxes and the paperwork that came with the clips says
89-93 240sx with stretch kit
i got the q38 clips on my s14 as you can see and they are solid i actually clipped the back one under the trim in the quarter window to so the bars are further apart and i tested it today down 95 and 85mph with 2 bikes and its all fine

I spent a lot of time searching for a Fit Kit to mount a Thule rack on my S13 fastback last year and it was very difficult to find. The Fit Kit has been discontinued by Thule and many rack shops won't have it. Your luck lies with whether or not you can find someone who happens to have old stock lying around. Some web retailers will show the fit kit as available and when you try to buy it, they will cancel your order and update their website as showing the Fit Kit no longer available.

The Fit Kit you'll need from Thule is number 92. Whether or not this fit kit will fit the S14, I can not confirm. Any of you with S14s install Thule racks with Fit Kit 92?

I found an ebay seller (eBay My World - nds! (http://myworld.ebay.com/nds!/)) that seems to stock some old Fit Kits and the 92 is among one of them: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360171852997 The seller also stocks Yakima Q Clips but I don't know if he has any 240SX kits.

I managed to find my Fit Kit from Windance out of Hood River, Oregon but I no longer see it on their website: Windance Boardshop (http://www.windance.com/) Give them a call and see if they can help you, they're a friendly bunch.

There is also another shop called Rack Solid (http://www.racksolid.com) out in Santa Monica, California that I managed to get another Fit Kit from and you might have a chance here, but they might be slow to ship it (probably because they have to search for the kit): http://www.racksolid.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_4&products_id=433

If you get the Short Roof Adapter, you can also put locks on it. I bought a pack of 10 and have 6 cylinders on the rack, the rest of the cylinders can be used for accessory mounts (bike/board/kayak/surf) that will accept a lock cylinder. The locks seem flimsy at best, but I think it's better than nothing.

The older 400 rack will be difficult to find parts for such as the hoods that go on the side of the towers so that you can install a lock cylinder. Many shops should have it, but I think if you get the 400XT, it will make your life easier. There isn't a whole lot of difference between the 400/400XT in terms capacity, just design/shape of the towers that hold the horizontal bars.

Fuel consumption will increase with a rack on the car as well as noise. I only have the rack installed when I'm hauling a kayak.

The only thing I don't like about the yakima rack is how close together the bars are. Do they have a short roof adapter like thule?

yes yakima offers a stretch kit similar to the thule that you have/had*. a stretch kit is pretty essential with coupes and hatchbacks. i have 3 sets of qclips for my cars and a stretch kit that is installed when i decided to roll my eg hatchback for a while :)

stretch kits are the most functional thing imho because it also doesn't point your bike trays to the sky.

the difference in clip design is just the type of roof you have and how the roof "sill" (i guess that's the right term) is shaped.

i had a 95 4 door integra with full rack and i just purchased a s14 silvia. so i'll update you on the clips that will "work". i will also be using a stretch kit on the s14 because on coupes there is little area to grab onto in order to get the rack less angled.

^^I have read on my sites that a Yakima rack with Q-towers works best with:
Q11 - 240sx Hatch 89-93
http://www.rackattack.com/product-pa...structions.pdf (http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/product-pdf/yakima-q11-clip-instructions.pdf)

Q38 - 240sx Coupe 89-93
http://www.rackattack.com/product-pa...structions.pdf (http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/product-pdf/yakima-q38-clip-instructions.pdf)

I just got a Yakima rack for mine but the Q38 clips are on the way. I purchased it for $200 and tons of extras (4 sets of clips, ski/snowboard rack, 3 bike racks). I am currently selling all the extras and if I get my asking price the rack will have been free.

This picture is the rack just resting on the top:

yea, there are the guys who will slap on a fairing and some cross bars because it looks cool, but getting a bike rack for looks is retarded. It's a "modification" that actually hinders performance. (ie gas mileage) Which is something i'm more than willing to sacrifice to

a. not mes up my trunk with a trunk mount rack
b. save time and effort of moving rear seats

:)

the red one from MD on 7 series wheels sold his thule setup to a guy in cali, then last i checked the setup was forsale again. There is a red cookie with a picture of his bmx atop that gets whored out alot too.... but yea, i think there are less than 5.

on my old integra i didn't have a fairing for about1-2 weeks because it was on backorder locally, but the noise that those cross bars create is ridiculous. talk about turbulent air. even with the fairing i can see why aerodynamics of the car suffers. during the summers when i'm commuting strictly highway i will remove my rack, but during school season, it's on pretty much 24/7

i live off campus from my university so im skrewed either way haha. before i got my ac working i used to reach my hand out of my sunroof to channel air into my face, and once i put the rack up i realized just how much air it redirections. there is no air traveling anywhere near the roof of my car.

but its the downside of doing what you want. just like fitting 10+ inch rims in stock fenders and running 3+ degress of camber.:blah:

those are two entirely difference setups. if you have feet for rain gutters i dont think they are even interchangeable with ones used for clamping door sils.

i know they are totaly different. i would basically replace the whole foot setup with ones that would work for a s13. i was thinking of using the xt400 aero foot pack. the load bars are square and the xt400 aero foot pack acomidates square load bars. but i would like to see what other have used when it come to thule.

Hey Nathan, nice car man:bigok:. Ive actually seen your car around on other forums (hondatech). I've been searching online for the s14 Yakima roof rack setup for a while and took a liking to yours. Could you lay out a bill of material for your current setup? I know you have the Q38 clips but what about the stretch kit? Just got the Yakima kit and looking forward to putting it on myself.

I have an s14a, bought the Q38 Kit with Q Towers and going to be ready to roll with a bike on top.

So I got a little excited last night and havn't had a chance to put the bike racks actually on yet, plus I'm still waiting for the stretch kit to be delivered.

Some of you were asking for the measurements, here's what I've found works. For the M1: 36.25" and for the M3 (rear bar) it's 36.5". That seems to work. Here's some photos (I'll take more once I get the stretch kit on)

u are correct, i'm using q11 clips and they clip really taught. I do not notice wobbling and they aren't damaging the moldings either. Perfect window seal as well (no wind noise). They have served me well so far! :fruit:

two answers.

1. u try...body kit off...drive

2. i have other clips for my other car, which is not modified whatsoever. so that does fine in the snow.

my setup with the 4 up there is nothing. 17x9.5J I carry wheels regularily on my roof no dents yet.

i figured that forged wheels (if te37) or whatever those were would be around 20lbs per rim ... def underestimated those if u are saying 220lbs. ... anyways... i say as long as it's not making dents in the roof currently...jlee should be fine! i'd maybe not considering carrying 4 of my VSKFs atop my roof. those weigh as much as battleships. ;)

Aren't the roof racks mounted to the a-pillar? That is an extremely flimsy piece of metal.

All that weight up there trying to move around just means that it is only a matter of time till it rips off.

well the weight isn't from the clips ....there are 4 towers with rubber pads that rest on the roof which i'd assume takes the brunt of the weight. The clips simply keep the rack on the roof. I'm sure if someone is at the track with their bike rack and 160lbs of load, then maybe it might be a bit sketch

Yes my clips are hooked onto the window trim piece. I'm going to switch it to how S14_driver and SHIFT_nismo have theirs.

If you guys could chime in as to what measurements you used that'd be great.

And !Zar! in regards to the weight being up there and putting strain on the flimsy trim. Yes it is flimsy but it's held up so far. And keep in mind when I have wheels on the rack I'm not driving like an idiot. Slow accel easy decel. Drive smart. Haven't had any issues.

And MB battles weight how much again? 20something pounds? x 4 that's not 220lbs.. LOL

I gat an old roof rack for BMW/E34,it's slightely the same as shown above, for my 240sx/3dr.

I'll test fitting on it,and i'll let you know if it's fittable or not(with pics if needed)

I know that BMW's roof racks are more easy to find

FYI,to find informations on Yakima.com site, you have to choose 'dealer fit my car tool',and select the right options(Nissan/240sx/89-93 year/3dr for my case),and you'll find all related references ;)

Used yakima towers with no lock cores
Q38 clips mounted directly to the roof.
Rubber pads thin and thick : type A/ D (as seen on the bottom of the pad)

yea i have used "A" pads on all 3 of the cars that have used the yakima setup and so far i think those are the best. If u have the clips for the roof, i can't see how they will clip to your molding. I have different clips than you as i just reused the ones i had off my old integra sedan

Have u tried using the q11 clips on the roof? Or have u always used it on the molding?

No shit your mileage will suck, it has nothing to do weight but the now giant "parachute" you have on the roof.

Also, do you know what a ton is? A SAE Ton is 2,000lbs.

That means your two Bikes that way 115lbs are no where near close enough to maxing out a class 1 hitch.

Hooray for craigslist. Just picked up my towers and crossbars today for cheap. :)

Also since the measurement info for S13's hasn't been listed yet, I figure I'll help out. (sorry, but I don't have the measurement info for S14's)

S13 Coupe (uses Q38 clips F&R): M1=38.125" M2=4" M3=38.25" M4=16"
S13 Hatch (uses Q11 clips F&R): M1=40.125" M2=3" M3=40.5" M4=18"

If you're using a stretch kit on an S13 coupe only the rear measurements change... M3=38.75" M4=30"

great info. when i bought the rack for my integra sedan a couple years back the manual was actually tailored specifically for the integra and gave me this roll up measuring tape to do measurements. To be honest, as long as it's secure and clears your sunroof (if u have one) that's all that matters.

my rack was setup (on my integra) so that when it slid back it was within an inch of hitting the rear crossbar , based on yakima's spec.

No shit your mileage will suck, it has nothing to do weight but the now giant "parachute" you have on the roof.

A) looking at the picture
B) Just trying it out

Just saying... it's kind of like tying a Christmas tree to your roof. No one right way to do it, just figure it out so it's strapped down secure. He obviously just used a bunch of ratcheting pull straps and bungee cords to secure it to the rack... pretty straight-forward.

So far I've only spent $83 on my rack. Craigslist finds and whatnot. I still could have saved a little more if I had gotten different crossbars, but they were brand new, so I jumped on 'em... also got an older style bike tray that sits level.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a131/Z_Spool/bikerack.jpg

All that and I've got room for a board mount or a spare set of rear tires for the track. Once it goes on I doubt if this will ever come off of the car. :p

just save yourself time and run your own speaker wires to your headunit
this.

Rather than try to fix factory wiring it's always easier (albeit sometimes a bit more labor intensive) and more efficient to wire your stereo independently.

But anywho... back on topic... roof racks. :)

How essential is it to run locks on all four towers for it to be secure? Would just locking one side keep thieves at bay?

ITs very essential. 2 locks will not work at all because you can "unhook" one side, and the other will peel right off. make sense? and word i guess i need to study up on wiring, which sucks.

The Fit Kit you'll need from Thule is number 92. Whether or not this fit kit will fit the S14, I can not confirm. Any of you with S14s install Thule racks with Fit Kit 92?

I finally bit the bullet and purchased the THULE Fit Kit 92 for my s14. I found a shop carrying it that had 1 in stock! It lists it as the s13 application but no application for the s14. He said another japanese company though had their application the same for the s13 and s14 so I am taking that chance.

I got THULE since I feel like the quality is much better than Yakima at least in my experience in snowboard racks. Gotta find the 400XT towers and bars. Will post pics once I get it setup! Cant wait for snowboarding season!!

I feel the exact opposite, I prefer Yakima's fit & finish far over Thule's. Plus AFAIK Thule is produced in the USA despite being a sweedish company and having "sweeden" all over their products. I prefer Japanese craftsmanship to American. and yeah, I know how fanboi that sounds, but whatever, just my preference.

Haha you must have a better Yakima rack than I had, I just sold mine after seeing how nice a friends Thule was on his car. I picked up the actual Thule fit kit for a 240 on here a week or so ago and I'm piecing the rack together from there. I'll get it on and pics up in a few weeks.

While I have no real complains about my Yakima rack, it was just flimsy compared to the Thule with the aero bars, which are extremely beefy. I also like the fairing kits on the Thule better than the Yakima because of the angled edges to control more wind and noise.

the problem im having is getting the towers to clamp down tightly to the roof. im guessing i need to bring them out further toward the edge of the roof on each side? i couldnt decide what adjustment to get set-up first, either the tower placement or the tension on the clamp in the tower

Great thread. It made me doing some research.

From Thule:
S13 kit should be 092 (quite specific)
http://www2.thule.com/upload/PDFs%20Fitting%20instructions/Kit/092.pdf

S14 kit should be 253 http://www2.thule.com/upload/PDFs%20Fitting%20instructions/Kit/253.pdf

I have just fitted myself on S13 Thule Classic 950 bars with kit 024 which needs to be modified, but will work without any mods at the moment. They just stood in the basement, left from VW Scirocco.

Hey guys been reading through this thread after deciding i really need a roof rack to haul my wheels and tyres to practice days as i cant fit enough in my coupe.

Im from England so would have to get the Yakima stuff shipped which would be mega expensive. Cant find any dealers over here that sell that Yakima stuff either.

Plenty of places sell the Thule gear though. Found this link earlier in the thread about the Yakima Q38 clips..

http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/product-pdf/yakima-q38-clip-instructions.pdf

And found an online dealer over here who sells the Thule racks for the Legacy Wagon and Lexus ES300.

http://www.roof-racks-uk.co.uk/cgi-bin/select-roof-bars-racks.cgi?man=Subaru&model=Legacy

So i was kinda guessing/hoping, seeing as the Yakima Q38 clips fit Subaru Legacy's, Lexus ES300 and of course the Coupe's, that a Thule kit made to fit the other cars would possibly fit my Coupe?

Maybe a long shot but what do you reckon?

Thanks in advance!

Picked up the older SST bases for 20$ with y6 and y30 clips. I just modified the y30s to clip under the trim piece. (Basically bent a lip on the end). Has anyone had experience with that piece being a decent point to anchor the clips?

I haven't had anything up there yet but I'd like to make q basket out of wood with extra feet on the bottom to spread the weight out a little more and put my stanley boxes full of RC car equipment on top of the basket.

The wooden broomsticks are temporary. I'll be using aluminum bars instead.

Pics for reference.
