so long story short i had a tap in my engine, took the valve cover off, found that i had knocked one of my rockers off i found the rocker and the guide but no shim.
so i took the lower oil pan off and no shim so i'm out of ideas
so any help would be cool
also what should i do about a lost shim i know that i need the correct size
so how should i measure to get the right one

Remove the windage tray immediately inside the lower oil pan - i think its 3-4 10mm bolts hold it on
Those little suckers like to get stuck on top of that thing
if they havent made it down to the pan itself.

About a week ago we got a Sr 240 into out shop with complaint of valvetrain noises. Turned out to be exactly what your describing. I put in a correct sized one off a spare sr20 head and it ran fine with the excpetion of the oil light flashing on for a few seconds.
Over the next day or two the oil light kept coming on more frequently. Took the pan off and found huge chunks of metal litering the pan along with the shim. Pulled the motor and stripped it down. Turns out the shim managed to somehow perfectly get itself alignd with the bottom edge of the cylinder and the piston skirt. Shattered the skirt and gouged the corner of the cylinder wall/block.
Shitty deal, hope yours just fell down to the pan. It also possible it may be stuck in one of the oil journals.
The FSM tells you how to determine the width of the shim needed.

This is why I made and was selling the shim tip height tool.

If those shims are uneven you will lose the rockers. Having rocker arm stoppers wont make a difference, because they come off sideways once the shim is out.

Hey I have a question. I plan on following a diy guide on NICO about the 9000 rpm head. If you havent heard about it google 9000 rpm sr20det head. When he measured for the shims, he used a feeler guage. Is this tool another option that will help measure clearence? Which way is prefered? Thanks

He is making sure the Solid-HLA is not too high because of manufacturing defects.
He didn't measure the valve tip shim height at all, just tossed them in.
The shims are to make sure the rocker arm hits flat, he is making sure the Solid-hla is not too high, pushing up the rocker arm to cam.
With hydraulic you can't measure anything like this that will end up as legitimate.

So does that mean I dont have to use the special nissan tool to measure the shims if i go solid lifters? I just have to make sure it sits flat on both sides.
all this is a pain in the a**, who wants to
do mine, heard you can use a macrometer
digital gauge to measure. the thickness
