View Full Version : Ground Location? - Rusted Battery Tray

I've searched and found some good stuff... I know the negative ground cable runs from the battery terminal to the battery tray, then snakes to the intake manifold. Problem is my battery tray is rusted. I am not going to relocate the battery to the truck and I'd rather not weld.

I've got new cables and know I need to try to ground to somewhere close to the battery (12 inches +/-). Where do you suggest?

Thanks,
MILLA

Well mine is grounded by the oil filter to one of the bolts that holds the bracket that supports the Intake manifold.. It dosnt neccesarily need to be grounded to the tray although it is a good idea. If you want just get a grounding kit, Run one wire to the spot i mentioned and one wire to one of the fender bolts or something.

he is trying to relocate his battery to the trunk.

when my friend did it he just ran the ground wire to one of the upright panel on the inside of the trunk near the quarter panels. make sure when you ground it that you sand down the area that you are bolting the cable to. my friend forgot to do this and his car was acting really weird at times. i figured out that his shit wasnt grounding properly, sanded it down, and he never any any electrical problems again.

shit i totally read that wrong. i thought it said he was going to relocate the battery to the trunk. -1 for me. in that case, if your battery tray is fucked im not exactly sure where to ground it. i would assume since the battery tray is connected to the chassis then grounding the cable as close to the battery as possible somewhere on the chassis would be the best option. if it came down to it you should be able to just drill a hole in the chassis, clean the paint off of that area and just bolt it in that hole.

All you need is the negative terminal grounded to the chassis - if the place on the tray where it normally grounds is rusted through, just sand down a section of the wheel well, but a bolt through from the wheel-side, with a washer and a nut. Then I'd recommend priming the area, just to make sure you don't get more rust.
