There is a hardline on my 90 240sx that follows up the driver side frame rail and leads into a soft tube which went into the charcoal canister. It smells of fuel. Whats the deal with it? Where does it go? What do people normally do with it during an SR swap?

it's emission equipment. The other end of that hose is in your gas tank. The tank vents into that charcoal canister rather than the atmosphere.

I was wondering what all that junk was too. Which canister are you talking about? Here's a (bad) pic of my engine bay. Is it the canister close to the headlight, near the fuse box (i think that one has something to do with the vaccum hoses) ? or is that mess that is closer to the master brake cyclinder? the part that my a/c is bungy corded too.....

I was kinda hoping I could rip all that crap out, cuz it kinda looks ugly.. can i?

Yeah, thats what I figured for now. I'll drop the tank later this summer and have it welded up.

you would be causing a pressure build up in the gas tank. maybe a bad thing when opening up gas cap??? any other dangers anyone might think of??

true. i'm not sure about having that welded shut. might want to check that.

And actually, i think the gas tank operates in negative pressure...but I could be wrong. For instance, to check your gas cap for proper operation, you have to suck IN...if it doesn't open (buzz), you have to replace it.

but i'm mostly just guessing here...
