View Full Version : Clunking diagnosis

Symptoms:
Clunking sound when driving over bumps. The sound is more prominent when the wheel is turned. When driving straight over bumps, there is no clunk.

I've already taken a pry bar to everything and checked:
ball joints, bushings, control arms, strut mounts, shock/springs, tie rods

All are solid and intact.

Now, I am narrowing down what it could be. I've considered removing the strut and re-sitting the spring to see if that would solve the problem. Before I go ahead and queer the alignment, I'd like to look at other options to see if I may have missed something.

From what I've read into it - there could be an issue with the steering assembly. With that said, I don't feel anything wrong with steering or in the wheel when I experience the clunking sound. But it's possible I overlooked something in the steering assembly. How would one diagnose a problem with steering?

Any suggestions?

I just starting getting some of the same naste too, and did what you did and I got nothing. Have you checked you subframe and see if the bushings are worn out? I got to take mine apart and see if mine is shifting arround.

I've check subframe bushings, they're fine.

My are fine too, all is tight. But I did notice the my left bottom mount on my spring is torn, so I'm guessing the spring is shifting arround.

i had a "clunk" noise in the front
when i turned my wheels all the way to the left/right
or when i came to a complete stop

found out that the tension rod brace and front sway bar BOLTS were loose.
just torqued it back

also replaced my tension rod with aftermarketones

never herd the sound again hope this helps

yup check tension rods. At first when i inspected them on the car they look ok a little worn but still intact. I got some tension rods w/ some poly urethane bushings and replaced them... clunking gone! Sometimes bushings or suspension parts might seem ok by eye but their actually bad.
