Right when I start up my car, first thing you hear is ticking.

When I rev it to higher RPMs, the ticking gets louder and faster.

I think it's the lifters, but, im not quite sure.

at first, it wasnt that bad, but now, it sounds like more than one lifter is doing it.

I checked my oil level, it's right where it needs to be.

and I use full synthetic 5w-30

Thanks.
Nick.

BTW: KA24E

check you chain guide,it could be broken like mine and slapin the chain on the head.just pull the vc off and stick a screwdriver down in there on the exhaust side and see if it wiggles.

It is the lifters. The lifters on the SOHC are non adjustable and when they start ticking like that they need to be replaced. At $30/ lifter and 12/head, it gets pricey.

Ive been told that the problem was caused by me using Fully Synthetic Oil.

I was told to switch to 30w-50 oil.

Is this true?

Thanks.
Nick.

Bump, anyone else think it's the oil?

i would try changing the oil to a different weight, but my buddy had the same problem, he took off his valve cover and started pushing down on the lifters and noticed some play, which you shouldn't be able to push them down by hand, and that showed that he had weak lifters, head sounds on a ka are usually the timing chain hitting the guides, which is the usual problem, or its weak lifters which iirc go for about $30 a piece

cylinder heads need routine maintenance just like any other engine parts.

you should either adjust your valve lash, replace the lifters, or overhaul the entire head.

KAE are useless..dont waste your time.

If worse came to worse, you could probably source a new head or even engine for cheaper then buying new lifters. I ran 10w30 and my old hatch was fine. You can try a heavier oil and see if it helps. It'd only be hiding the problem though, not fixing anything.

so are your posts, this is like the 3rd one that has no relevance to the OP's question. :gives: if you don't like KAE's, i know quite a few people with very strong single cams and a few single slammers, aka ka-t's that are far from useless.

I had a few bad lifters in my sohc when I first got it. A trip to the junkyard and $10 later everything was quiet again. Definitely better than a new head or new lifters from the dealer.

Do I have to take the cam out to replace them?

Im worried about fucking the timing up with the cam gear and the timing chain.

No, you just have to take the bar with the lifters out. It was one of my first adventures under a valve cover and it was easy.

Can you give me a basic run down of how to do it?

I don't wanna just run into something that might end up taking me a week.

This is my DD :-(
